Swearing. Profanity. Dropping the F-bomb. We all probably do it at some point, but do you swear too much? I know I do. So, for one week I tried to quit swearing.

If you have been here for a while, you will know by now that I am trying out little experiments that are supposed to make my life a bit better. Or make me a bit better. I am aware of the fact that I swear WAY too much. I can drop the F-bomb at 3 times in one sentence, and that’s just when I am talking to my mum! I’m kind of ashamed to admit that when me and my mum get together for a bitching session, the air can turn blue with the amount of swearing that we can do. But for one week, it was going to stop.
- 3 simple things you can do to be more productive
- I stopped watching TV for a week to see what would happen
- I put my phone down for a week to see what would happen
What was the plan?
The plan was simple- don’t swear. That was it. I wasn’t planning on changing or using another word to replace the swear that I was planning on using. I know some people like to swap their swears out for other words but they seem to lack the punch that a swear gives. I don’t tend to swear when I am trying to insult a person or if I am having a fight with someone, mainly because I tend not to do anything that can be used against me in a court of law. And yes, depending on where in the world you are, swearing can be a criminal offense or be used as evidence against you, especially if you are having a slanging match with someone. I am a cathartic swearer most of the time (road rage anyone?) or I use it informally with my friends. It shouldn’t be too hard to stop, right?
- My steamy hour || I tried an experiment with the ironing and it did not go well
- I started paying attention to my step count and activity levels every day
- I tried something with a daily to-do list and was surprised with the results
How did it go?
Is it possible to be addicted to swearing? Because I couldn’t stop! In fact, everyone said I got worse as the week went on! I didn’t think it was possible for me to swear any more than I already do, but I managed it. Before 9 am on day one, I swore three times in the car because people can’t drive or read road signs. And it just got worse from there! I actually swore in a text message that same day. Classy! By the end of the week, I was very aware of how much swearing I was doing. Every time I swore by accident, I swore again because I’m not supposed to. See the problem here?
- I tried something with a beauty routine and discovered something interesting
- Why the saying “you have the same hours in the day as Beyonce” is a load of rubbish
Will I try to keep this going?
No, and not because I like swearing. It’s more a case of I tried not swearing and done it a million times more. Maybe I should try to increase my word power so that I can think of another expressive word to use. Or learn to swear in another language because then nobody will know if you are swearing. Or, I could research some old-fashioned insults and swears for when I need a release. Some people and psychologists will agree that swearing is just a fact of life and can be useful, but I don’t like the thought of my kids dropping a curse word in class because “that’s what mummy does”.
What about you guys? Do you swear loads? And do you have a favourite swear word? Let me know what you think about the whole curse words thing.
