For the last few weeks, I have been trying various things to make my life better. Small changes could add up to something big. My most recent experiment was with the ironing pile and how to get rid of it.

What was the experiment with the ironing?
Let me start by saying this, I am not a big fan of ironing. I know a lot of people fold stuff straight from the dryer and pop it in a drawer, and that’s fine. You do you. But, for me, this sends my OCD through the roof! It needs to be pressed, their needs to be lines, it needs to be steamed within an inch of its life. I love pulling a crisp, pressed pair of jeans out of the wardrobe. Popping on cotton pj’s that have been sprayed and ironed. I’m weird like that. But my problem is, I never seem to get the ironing done. In the past, we could blame my TV watching but since I have ditched that, in theory, I should have plenty of time in the evening to throw the ironing board up and get steamy with the iron for an hour. And that was the plan for the week, spend one hour a day getting through the 6ft 4 pile of ironing that permanently sits in the cupboard under the stairs.

How did it go?
This was a lot harder than I thought. I seem to have a lot going on these days. Between finishing my books, writing on here, being a parent, running a house, it’s hard. There is so much to do in a day but that is the point of the experiment, to build small healthy habits to create a lasting difference in my life. Day one, I managed to get an hour done. And that was it. For the rest of the week, I struggled to find an hour that I could pop the board up and do the very thing I had assigned for myself. Keep in mind, the task was not “stand and do every bit of ironing in one go”. It was just to take one hour out of the day to iron. If I got it all done in that time, great. But if I didn’t, it was no big deal because tomorrow I had another hour. I had a Google to see if I could pinpoint why I failed but a lot of places tell you to “start small” with your life goals. Seriously? My life goals are to be a good mother, a highly productive and organised human being, and leave a legacy of writing. Finding an hour a day to iron could not be a smaller task in the grand scale of things.
Will I stick with it?
Although this was a massive failure, it is something that I will keep at. Obviously, I will just have to try harder to find that hour and make it happen. I don’t want a big pile of clothes looking at me from the cupboard under the stairs. I cannot and will not fold them and pop them into the drawers to get the pile down to zero and have a fresh start, even just typing that made my chest tighten. Maybe at some stage, the penny will drop and finding that hour will be second nature to me. But for now, the ironing pile having a staring contest with me and I keep blinking.
