I don’t know how many times I have said that I am going to get my life together, make a plan, do the plan for a few days, and then throw the plan in the bin. This time, it’s different. This time, I have to do it. And I’m starting with a week one review. Because if strangers on the internet can’t keep you accountable, who can?
Monday
I started the week strong and managed to tick off most of the things on my to-do list. The important thing to remember here is that I created a do-to list. It is not fancy. I have a collection of paper weekly planners that I was planning on using as a teacher. Instead, I’m using them to sort my life out. To be honest, I don’t like using online planners. Although I can programme them to refresh every day, there is something that scratches my brain when I put pen to paper.
A lot of the stuff I had planned to do was simple enough in theory, and each completed task would benefit me and my life in some way. For example, one of the tasks is daily yoga practice. The benefits are clear. All I need is 20-30 minutes and YouTube. Of course, going to a class would be a lot better but we are looking for a 1% improvement every day and creating a habit that will stick.

Tuesday
Today, I fell off the wagon a little bit. I skipped my yoga, didn’t do any writing, and I didn’t read anything. The two tasks that I skipped that annoyed me were the yoga and the reading. Yoga is something that can be completed within 15 minutes (I never said it had to be an hour long, just some yoga stretches to get my body moving), and the reading can be completed in bed in the evening instead of scrolling on my phone. Two tasks that could be popped in and I managed to drop the ball. The writing is something else. I’ve lost the notebook that has my notes about my latest writing project and I was planning on 10,000 words a day. At this point I would be happy to get 100 words. In my defence, I had to work in the youth club in the evening. This means getting home late with the kids (it’s for their age group) and getting them ready for bed 2 hours later than normal. However, the kids also had an after school choir practice today so I had a bit longer in the house by myself and still managed to balls it up.

Wednesday
After yesterday’s slight failure, I gave myself a slight kick up the butt. The arrival of my new Stanley cup probably helped. I also decided that I would no longer focus on the negative, it is going to be positive vibes from here on out! And for the most part, I did pretty well today. The only thing I didn’t manage was my hour of reading in the evening but I was really tired and went straight to sleep. I also reminded myself that it doesn’t matter what order I do the things in, as long as the things on the checklist are done. This helped to take some of the mental pressure off and gave me some flexibility with it.

Thursday
I do not know what happened today. After yesterday and getting so much completed, I fell off the wagon again. But I know what the problem is, for today at least. I got a bit caught up with listening to Audible and forgot to switch it off and move on to the next task. I also had a nap. Don’t know why I had a nap but one minute I was sitting on the sofa finishing my lunch, the next thing I knew, a couple of hours had passed and my alarm to pick up the kids was going off. Not sure if I needed it or if I was just being super lazy. Football practice was on the cards for my youngest son after school, and a lashes appointment for me. It was a busy afternoon.

Friday
Friday is always a weird day for me. Even though I still have to get up early to get my kids to school, I have to stay up late with working in the youth club. This is not the little people; this is the youth club for the bigger teenagers. This is another one of those days that I’m not sure what happened but I dropped the ball on a lot of things. Maybe giving myself the flexibility earlier in the week was a bad idea and I need to do this in a certain order, otherwise I miss bits.

Saturday
I did not sleep well. And I know exactly why. Bloody drama reels. I’m not talking about scrolling through reels that are interesting and about real people; they are those AI generated stories that involve dragons and people being reborn after the person they thought was the love of their life kills them. My Facebook feed was full of them, I was influenced to download the app(s), I watched the stories. Dear lord! So much time wasted, so much sleep lost. It was addictive! When morning came around, I deleted the app(s) and cleared my Facebook feed of the ads. Thinking about it now, I’m not surprised I wasted so much time watching them, my feed had ad after ad.
But enough about that. Once I had myself pulled together, I had a baby shower to attend. I also told my mum I would take her dog to the vets and I forgot. Note to self: write things on the calendar, otherwise you will forget. I was out of the house a good bit of the day so I knew I was not going to get much completed. It also didn’t help that I thought I was having a heart attack at one point. No, really. Turns out I had pulled a muscle in my chest and it was inflamed. So that was me on the sofa again; and I fell asleep once the pain had cleared off.

Sunday
I always allow myself a bit of a lie in on a Sunday. Despite being named after the Bionic Woman doesn’t mean I actually am one. Hence the naps during the week. Today, I knew I was not going to get many of the tasks on the checklist completed. Sunday is my “off” day. My cheat day. The day of relaxing and ditching the rules (sort of). I ditched the yoga and went swimming instead. I still meditated. Still completed a little bit of work, not much but enough to earn a tick. Still wrote in my night journal. So that was pretty good going, especially as I wasn’t planning on doing any of it.

‘Overall, it’s been a bit of a mixed bag this week. But, it’s progress over perfection.
