Plot
Peter Highman wants to get home to his wife in LA when his baby is due but finds himself in a heap of trouble when he crosses paths with Ethan Tremblay, an aspiring actor. They first meet at the airport in Atlanta when their cars crash into each other and switch bags at the curbside. And once they are on the plane, Ethan starts throwing words around like “bomb” and “terrorist”, which gets them kicked off the plane. With only five days before his wife has her c-section and now on the no fly list, Peter has no choice but to team up with Ethan to get across the country after leaving his wallet and ID on the plane. As the two mis-matched buddies begin their journey, Ethan reveals that he is headed to Hollywood to be an actor because his dad had just died and he wanted to follow his dreams.
Thoughts on the Movie
It’s been a while since I laughed so hard at a movie. For the last ten years, I’ve thought of Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man and not much else. Due Date was released in 2010, so it isn’t really a new movie but the jokes still seem fresh. I will admit, I am not the biggest fan of Zach Galifianakis but I will watch him in a movie. His deadpan humour fits the dysfunctional character of Ethan really well and not many actors could bring that level of social ignorance to a role and have it be funny.
Fin
Everyone needs a good laugh and comedy should push the boundaries of what is normal. Never in a million years did I think I would laugh so hard at seeing a dog getting spat on but apparently, Robert Downey Jr makes it funny. Due Date is on par with the movie Plane, Trains, and Automobiles for the comedy style. The movie is great for some laughs but there are a few touching moments when Peter comforts Ethan over drinking his dad’s ashes.
