Back in the 1990s, teenagers were thought to be cruel and no movie proved the point more than Cruel Intentions. Follow the adventures of Sebastian and Kathryn, two twisted step-siblings who take pleasure in causing pain.

The Plot
Spoilt step-siblings Sebastian and Kathryn, take great pleasure in causing others pain. Sebastian enjoys seducing girls before throwing them to the side. Kathryn, on the other hand, is much more subtle with her manipulation. Over the course of one summer, they decide to ruin the lives of Cecile and Annette. Cecile is the super-naive girl who Kathryn was dumped for, and now Kathryn wants revenge. Annette is the daughter of the new headmaster and Sebastian considers her his ultimate conquest. Annette considers her virginity important, which makes Sebastian want her even more. So, Kathryn and Sebastian make a wager. If Sebastian doesn’t sleep with Annette before school starts, Kathryn gets his Jaguar. If Sebastian wins, he gets to sleep with Kathryn, the one girl he shouldn’t have. During the course of the summer, Sebastian finds himself falling for Annette.
Thoughts on the Movie
This is a classic movie now that helped to launch the careers of quite a few favourite actors and actresses. Sarah Michelle Gellar was riding high on her Buffy fame while Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe were still kind of unknown. Reese and Ryan were actually a couple during the filming of the movie and had been together for a while, making filming some of the scenes a bit awkward, not that it showed. At the time, the movie was met with mixed reviews from the grown-ups but the teenage fans loved it. This has put the film in the teenage classic section along with the likes of The Craft and The Breakfast Club.
Fin
As far as movies from the 1990’s go, this was one of the darker ones but it is so much fun to watch how the characters try and twist everything around to suit themselves. The soundtrack is packed with some amazing music from the 90’s too with classic songs from Placebo and The Verve. If you are looking for some dark fun from the 90’s, then this is one movie to watch. Cruel Intentions might not be good fun, but it is definitely delicious.
