5 life-changing books for women that you need to read

When it comes to life-changing books, let’s face it, it’s pretty subjective. What is life-changing to me might not be to you. But I bet you still want to know about the books that changed my life, you want to read them, because you might have a life-changing a-ha moment that shakes you to your core and turns your world upside-down. I don’t blame you. I love hearing about the books that have shaped the lives of other women. Here are five books that have shook me and changed my life for the better.

Little Black Book by Otegha Uwagba

You may remember the review I posted about this book a while ago. This was the first book that I reviewed that was centred on women in business and getting your shit together. It is not a long book, nor is it complicated, but it packs a punch. I don’t know about anyone else, but when it comes to women in business books, some of them are a bit fluffy and seem to skirt around the issues of getting your finger out of your ass and getting stuff done. Some of them are ok but some are just plain condescending. This little book is none of those things. Otegha Uwagba is straight to the point when it comes to pointing you in the right direction and getting your professional life pulled together.

Warrior Goddess Training Program by HeatherAsh Amara

This is one of those books that I downloaded on Audible and didn’t think anything of it. I had no idea that I would enjoy this so much. Now, before you get up in arms and start complaining that this is an audiobook so it doesn’t count, it still does because there is a heap of other books (made with actual paper) that you can buy to compliment the audiobook. There is a lot within the program that will make you think about how you handle your thoughts and feelings. With all of the spiritual mumbo-jumbo that floats about the place, it sometimes seems like a lot of these so-called gurus are trying to make you have a spiritual bypass instead of facing your demons head on and kicking their asses.

Basic Witches

This might seem like a strange one but hear me out. First of all, I have been a practicing pagan for around 15 years and a heathen a lot longer than that. I got this book because I love a new witchy volume to read through. This is not the typical witchy book. A lot of witchcraft books are very spiritual and can go deep into the craft and history. I have read plenty of “women in business” books that bring in the law of attraction or ritual work and it is wrapped in a bow called empowerment. Sorry, but I can spot that stuff a mile off and it is kind of insulting sometimes. This is the other side of the coin. This book is not for witches and has been slated massively by the magick community for being an insult to the religion. But, there is a certain level of basic witchcraft knowledge that might be useful if you are struggling with your self-care.

Becoming by Michelle Obama

This was one of the most talked about books in 2018, and for good reason too. It doesn’t matter if you like her or loathe her, Michelle Obama was the First Lady of the United States for 8 years and decided to give us a peek into her world. The introduction to the book was enough to empower me take the bull by the horns and try to get my life in order. How was it possible that visualising the former First Lady making a grilled cheese sandwich have such a profound effect on me? I have no idea. Despite being in a place of real privilege, Michelle Obama gave up so much of her freedom to be the First Lady of Colour for the United States. If you can, get the audiobook and listen to her tell her story, there is something so soothing about her voice, even though she is talking about racism and how she has been treated over the years. It is definitely one of the more inspiring books on this list.

Deliciously Ella by Ella Woodward

How can a cookery book be life-changing? Easy, this was one of the first cookbooks that I read that had a real focus on flavour and being healthy. It opened my eyes to a new way of cooking, using ingredients in ways I had never thought to use them. I would never had thought to use sweet potatoes in anything, never mind in chocolate brownies! Some of my favourite lunches have come from this book and it taught me a new way to cook and love my food. I always remembered the saying from Ratatouille, “I don’t like food I love it. And if I don’t love it, I don’t swallow”. The recipes in this book will have you fall in love with healthy food all over again.
