Recently, we have had a lot of kids books coming through the doors of the KappaCino Book Club which is great news for all of your little summer readers. Today, we are peeling back the cover of Tommy Turners Battle For Yorintown by Ali Seegar to see what Tommy has been up to.

The Book
It’s true that Tommy Turner wanted another adventure, but he never expected to be sucked headfirst into a bottle! Or to discover that, of all of the creatures in the universe, only he can save an alien planet from dying. He certainly didn’t mean to time-travel with Uncle Harry and Digby to the great ancient Maya city of Pakatoka, where they must save themselves before they can find the pyramid with the secret chamber. But the fact is, when you’re a time traveller, anything can happen.

Thoughts on the Book
My son was the ultimate guinea pig for this book as it is recommended for ages 8-12. Jack just turned 8 last month but reads at a 10-year-old level (or so his teacher tells me #humblebrag). Each chapter is short so younger readers won’t be reading for hours to reach the pause point of a change of chapter. Throughout the book, there are various illustrations to help keep the story going, but this is not a picture book. One of the more interesting things I found was hidden at the back with a couple of pages dedicated to some Maya facts.

Thoughts on the Author
Ali Seegar has spent most of her career writing professionally for other people. “Tommy Turner’s Tremendous Travels” was her first children’s novel. During childhood, her days were mostly taken up with fantastical daydreams of other worlds—when not off on an adventure herself into the rural Kentish landscape she grew up in. Now, she is bringing some of these tales to life; looked at through the eyes of Tommy Turner, a boy who finds he is an unlikely hero. This book is partly set in Mexico where Ali spent a year in her late teens and became fascinated by Maya history and pyramids. She is currently working on the third book in the series.

Overall
With this being part of a series, you would be better reading the first book before diving into this one. As a stand-alone book, it still works but there is a richness to the storyline if you read Tommy Turner’s Tremendous Travels first. Ali has provided a small mountain of information on her website to help build the world around Tommy and his adventures.

Looks like a wonderful book for kids! I am even a little sad my elder niece is too old to read it already (she’s enjoying Lord of The Rings now) and younger is too little to read at all
I think writing has the great ability to get to people’s hearts.
That’s why knowing how to tell an emotion or the story of a person becomes a nice journey to undertake.
In it, therefore, reflect a feeling and create empathy, as can putting yourself in the shoes of a mother who faces the inevitable growth of a child.
Or live incredible adventures through the eyes of a fantasy character.
Words, which derive from a book or blog, have the ability to unite.
Looks interesting but not really my genre.
I love reading. And I liked your review in here. I will definitely check it out.
