How To Build Good Habits

If you think about it, it’s much easier to develop bad habits over good ones. It’s easier to lie in bed for longer in the mornings than it is to get up early. It’s easier to order takeout than it is to cook a healthy meal from scratch. It’s easier to keep on smoking than it is to quit. And so on. Yet these bad habits are often bad for us if not physically then certainly mentally and emotionally. This is why it’s important to build good habits and combat bad ones. It won’t be easy, but here are some ways to get started.

Start Small

You could decide to start running for 10 miles every day. That’s a good habit to get into, and certainly one that will do your health (both mental and physical) a lot of good. However, it’s also a lot to ask of yourself when you’re just starting with your new routine. If you tried to do this right away without building up to it or taking part in any training, you would more than likely fail, and then go bad to your old habits, or least be tempted to.

If, however, you start much smaller and say you will go for a 10-minute run each day, this is much more achievable. You will reach your goals and feel proud of yourself, which will make you determined to do more. Gradually increase the distance you are running or the amount of time, and you’ll reach 10 miles eventually.

This idea can be related to any good habit, whether it’s eating a healthy breakfast, quitting cigarettes, saving money, or anything else.

Find Out What’s Holding You Back

The reason you are finding building and maintaining your new good habits difficult, despite wanting to do it and knowing you need to, might be that something is holding you back and stopping you from achieving your full potential.

If this is what is happening, you will need to discover what this issue is and deal with it before you can move forward successfully. There could be all kinds of reasons for this, such as the fear of getting changed in front of people at the gym (stopping you from going to work out), the fact that you’re afraid of rejection (preventing you from obtaining payday loans to help put you back on track financially), or the idea that you don’t like certain foods (stopping you from trying new and healthy dishes).

The best way to face these fears is head-on. You’ll only know for sure if they are truly an issue if you start developing your new, good habits. It might be that they’re not such an issue after all.

Have A Failure Plan

Everyone fails sometimes; this is just a fact of life and nothing to be ashamed of as long as you have tried your best to succeed. When you’re trying to build good habits, you may well fail and fall back into your old ways from time to time.

This is not something that should be too much of a problem if you have a ‘failure plan’ in place. This plan will help you to work out the next steps after you have had a setback in your journey to better habits.
