Ensure Your Self-Care Habits Are Actually Helping You

Self-care is one of the hottest topics around in recent years. More and more, people are starting to realize that physical and mental health is essential to a life well-lived, or a life that can be enjoyed. However, we cannot purchase good health from the store, nor win it in a casino. We need to do our utmost to ensure we may healthy choices from day to day, and for many that involves enjoying and taking part in a range of different health-focused activities.

Because we live in a world where money is needed to survive, Latte Lindsay runs a number of affiliate programmes and offers contributed or partnered content. If you choose to click the links and read the posts, the site may earn a commission or receives a payment. All of the opinions are my own. Opinions expressed here are the author’s alone, not those of any partner brands/company(s), beauty & lifestyle brands, airlines or hotel chain, and have not been reviewed, approved or otherwise endorsed by any of these entities unless specified.

Yet there is always the risk that despite our efforts, our self-care techniques may not be as helpful as we would have imagined, or can have certain effects we need to take care of. Solid sleep is an essential part of recuperating from the intensity of each day, yet it’s perfectly clear that sleeping over ten hours a night is certainly not healthy for most adult people. This means that something so restorative, so healthy and so necessary can even be harmful if taken to the extreme. In that context, we’d love to use a few more examples to help you ensure your self-care is well-measured.

Exercise Maintenance

It’s important to note that while exercise is an essential part of remaining healthy, exercise by itself can be categorized as intensive stress on the body. For instance, a weightlifter is not growing their muscles by working out and lifting heavy weights, they are actually breaking down their muscle fibers through intensive effort, with the hope that careful recovery will, as is physiologically assured, help them grow stronger in order to meet that newly introduced load. This means that exercise is nothing without recovery.

Thankfully, sleep takes care of that for us, but we need to ensure we’re getting at least 7-9 hours of sleep a night, and that we care for its hygiene. Additionally, exercise recovery can be considered as a formula of correct care regarding the exercise you’re currently engaged in. For instance, learning how to heal your feet is essential if encountering cracked heals from intense running, or if you’re failing to ensure the hygiene of your footwear each and every session. Stretching, foam-rolling, good nutrition, cold showers, all of this contributes to aiding your body in its recovery stage. This way, the next time you workout, incremental progress will be something you can rely on.

Supplementary Schedule

Supplements can be a very useful means for any healthy, fitness-inspired person to ensure they’re gaining all the vitamins and minerals they need. That being said, supplements exist for almost everything in 2020. It’s very easy to overdo it. If you’re taking pre-workout, creatine, protein powder, mass builder, or just too much zinc, magnesium, vitamin D, or multivitamins, you may find that your health is actually being negatively impacted. This also goes for if you’re relying on these supplements to give you a complete vitamin profile rather than simply eating a balanced and healthy diet with these as an addition, as they do not act as a substitute.

The best way to take supplements is to keep things basic. Certain niche products, such as CBD oil or fulvic acid, can be taken in conjunction with deep research, in low doses, and after approved by your Doctor. It must also be imperative to realize that CBD is somewhat still subject to regulation, so always do your homework if you feel CBD will be beneficial for your health. But do not purchase wanton supplements just because it seems like you need them.

Feeling Uptight

Unfortunately, it can be that self-care leads to neuroticism if you do not balance this with a fair amount of understanding. It’s fantastic to live a healthy life, and it’s brilliant to take care of yourself. In fact, this is perhaps one of the most important things you can do. However, that doesn’t mean you need to feel uptight accepting a piece of birthday cake from your nephew or niece.

You needn’t have to judge your friends or lambast them because they’ve decided to vape. You also needn’t feel as though the whole day is ruined because you felt tired and struggled to lift as much weight as you normally do that morning. Staying humble is an important part of the fitness journey. Additionally, a little indulgence from time to time can be a great means of keeping yourself sane. For instance, a cheat meal once every two weeks for those losing weight can keep them on the straight and narrow. Remember you’re hoping to structure long-term health here rather than to act as a tyrant over your decision-making process.

With this advice, we hope you can ensure your self-care habits are actually helping you.
