Fishing is one of those hobbies that some people love to hate. I’ve been fishing since I was a kid and I like to take my kids out with me now that they are going up. So what’s the big deal? Here are some reasons why fishing should be your newest hobby.

Family time
As I mentioned in the intro, I have been fishing since I was a kid. My dad wanted to bond with my brother and didn’t think that I would be interested. Unfortunately for him, my mum loves the great outdoors and insisted that we go too. Keep in mind, this is the woman that can hunt rabbits, of course she wanted to go fishing. Growing up, my grandfather wasn’t the most affectionate of people. But one thing he did love doing was fishing and hunting. My dad wouldn’t let any of us head out on a hunting trip with my grandfather, but he was more than happy to take us fishing. This man was known for his temper and shouting, but when you put a fishing rod in his hand, he became the quietest man on the planet who experienced great joy in explaining his favourite fishing techniques.
Travel
Have you ever wondered what it is like reeling in a massive tuna off the coast Mauritius? I’ve never done it but it looks amazing. When you travel, there might be the opportunity to head to the water and go fishing. This can be anything from fishing in a local lake or heading out on the sea with a big boat. Deep sea fishing is a big tourist attraction in some places so don’t miss your opportunity to get out on the water. Just be sure that you use a good company and don’t put yourself in danger by ignoring safety information. It doesn’t matter if you have never been fishing before, a lot of these companies can tailor the trip to suit your level of experience by teaching you everything you need to know.
Nature time
We won’t get to spend every fishing trip off the coast of a beautiful country but we will always be in nature. Being in nature is great for your mental health, can teach your kids about the world around them, and will help to get you away from your screens. Our kids are in front of screens a lot so it is great to get them away from them for a while. Of course, it is a good idea to bring your phone to help you identify things that can be found in nature such as plants and trees. They can even get the attention of other fish with Royal marine boilies to watch. Fresh air is a great way to tire the kids out and it is wonderful to see them get excited about nabbing their first catch.
Life skills
I wouldn’t say I’m a prepper but I do believe that we could all do with some life skills. Like I mentioned earlier, my mum can hunt, fish and has a wide range of skills that mean she is moving in with me in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Even though this will (hopefully) never happen, it won’t hurt to have some skills. Why? Because everyone is chasing that Instagram worthy life. Having a life skill, such as fishing can ensure that you can survive if you take the wrong path on that nature hike. Maybe I’m being paranoid but I think it might be useful to have some survival skills to help you get through life.
Chill out
As great as it is to spend time with your family and have a hobby that you can do together, there is something wonderful about fishing by yourself. Being in nature, at the side of a riverbank, watching the water flowing, can be great for your mental health. I feel this way about being at the beach, there is something soothing about standing in the shallow water, watching the waves crash. I feel the same thing when I am fishing by myself. If you need an excuse to spend time in the quiet, fishing should be your newest hobby. Didn’t you know? Loud noises scare the fish away.
