I have never been shy when it comes to experimenting with beauty trends. Unfortunately, this means that I can end up with a mess that needs a professional to clean up. My hair is one area that has been destroyed a few times over the years. During the last year, I have decided to make a change and started seeing a good hairdresser that I trust. And here are five reasons why you need a good hairdresser too.

The Colour
A few years ago, I had my hair bright blue and loved it. When I got pregnant with my youngest, I decided to ditch the colour, dyed it black with a box dye, and left it like that. In the years that have followed, I have used box dyes because I didn’t have time to head to the salon for a proper colour. That all changed last year when I stopped using the box dyes because my hair was in terrible condition. I spent a few months washing the box dye out before I booked an appointment for a professional colour. Since I started getting my hair professionally coloured, my hair has been in better condition, the colour has lasted longer, and there are no patchy bits. Not going to lie, I’m terrible at putting dye in and always have patchy bits when I do it myself. When my hairdresser does my hair, I know that the colour is all over and I don’t have to worry about my hair being a patchy, crunchy mess.
The Condition
Bleaching your hair can be one of the worst things you can do to your hair if you don’t know what you are doing. And as my hair is naturally really dark, putting bleach in it is always a hit or miss. As I stated in the point above, putting hair dye in yourself can cause a lot of problems. Box dyes and home bleach kits are not designed to care for your hair. When I get my hair coloured professionally, I always get an extra treatment to help keep the hair healthy and prevent damage. Getting those split ends trimmed every few weeks makes a huge difference too. It’s also worth mentioning that your hairdresser has trained for years to get qualified, plus they regularly take additional courses to ensure that they have the skills to keep your hair looking great.
The Style
One of the things that you can do to ensure that you look put together (no matter what is happening in your life) is to style your hair. I know I’m not the only one who has to struggle with styling after visiting the hairdresser but part of the problem can be the tools that we use. Think about it, your hairdresser has professional tools that help to shape and style your hair. Investing in high quality tools that are used by hairdressers such as mdlondon is a no-brainer. Having proper tools can make a massive difference to how you style your hair. Even just getting a good blow dry can make a huge difference to your look for the day. Also, using the correct tools will ensure that you don’t cause damage to your hair and scalp.
The Products
I’ve used some weird stuff on my hair in the name of science. Testing the things that claim to be miracles in bottles is part of my job but it is so much easier to listen to your hairdresser. A lot of products that are on social media are there because someone is being paid to promote them. I’ve always tried to be honest and share how products have worked for me but I could have saved myself a lot of drama if I had listened to the recommendations that my hairdresser made. For example, there are certain shampoos that are marketed for coloured hair but will completely strip the colour within a few washes. The products and tools that you use should be the ones that your hairdresser uses. While it is fun to use some different stuff, you never know the damage that they can cause.
Relaxation
Doing your own hair can be pretty stressful. I know some people are not fond of sitting in a chair and having someone fuss over them, but to me, that is pure bliss! First of all, a lot of hairdressers will give you a head massage when you are getting your hair washed. I love it! Second, as I have stated a few times, seeing a professional means that you know that your hair is in good hands. This takes away the worry of what mess you will be left with. And finally, it is time with other adults. I’m not a big talker in the hairdressers, but it is nice to spend a few hours surrounded by other adults and listening to conversations that are not about potty training and maths. My hairdresser knows that I come to chill out, and is more than happy to bring me black coffee while I sit quietly on TikTok.
