Getting a good nights sleep is top of everyone’s list these days. But what can you do to make your bed more comfortable? And are mattress toppers as good as everyone makes them out to be? I got my mitts on a Simba mattress topper to test out.

What do I currently have on my bed?

What I have on my bed is very important because I love getting a good night’s sleep. You might remember the black silk pillow case that I reviewed last year, it is still on my bed. I’ve recently upgraded my sheets to 600 tread count cotton sheets. Oh yes! I’ve upped my sleeping game and I’m making sure I am as comfortable as I can be. The mattress I have is an Ikea mattress that has springs and a memory foam layer. Not the most expensive mattress out there but it was the one that won the comfort test at the time when I changed my bedframe just over two years ago. So, as you can imagine, where I sleep is pretty comfortable as it is. Do I really need a mattress topper? Turns out, the answer was yes.

Why use a mattress topper?

As time goes on, your mattress might become less comfortable. As I said, my current mattress was brand new two years ago. Mattress toppers can add an extra layer of cushioning to a mattress that has lost some of its plumpness. However, if your mattress is a bit too firm, it can soften the sleeping surface. A mattress topper can also extend the life of your mattress, making it a cost-effective alternative to buying a brand new one. We all know we need to replace our mattress at some point. Some mattresses need to be replaced after five years, some can go as long as fifteen years. If you need to replace your mattress every five years, it can make a massive difference to your budget if you can get some extra time out of it.

The benefits of using a Simba Mattress Topper

As with all of my reviews, I approached this with a glass half empty view. I’m looking for flaws! Starting from the top, the delivery was quick even though it was coming from the mainland to Northern Ireland. The package it came in was big but not too heavy. My 12 year old son was able to lift it (but then again, he is getting taller and stronger than me). It was a two person job to get the mattress topper out of the box because of how tightly it was packed, however you could do it yourself. I had no desire to throw my back out and my son was happy to flex his new man muscles with some manly lifting for his wee mummy. Once we had the Simba mattress topper out of the box, it was simply a case of cutting off the plastic and rolling it out on the top of my current mattress.

I walked away and left it for a few hours to puff out. My only complaint at this stage was the smell of the plastic sheeting was strong and hung around in the air. Don’t be discouraged by this, all you need to do is give the topper a quick spray with Febreze and it’s grand. This, friends and enemies, is my only complaint about the process but it is so small I completely forgot about it until I came to write this post. As the day went on, it puffed up and added a good few inches of height to my bed. All that I needed to do was wrap the straps of the topper around my mattress and we were good to go. I had stripped my bed sheets, put them in the washing machine, and when it came to climbing into bed later… WOW! It was as if I was being held by a marshmallow. Baby seals were kissing my back. It was… soooo comfy! I didn’t realise how uncomfortable my bed was until that moment. And remember, my mattress is only two years old.

Would I recommend it?

Absolutely! Let me be very clear, I have had other mattress toppers in the past and they have come nowhere close to the comfort of a Simba mattress topper. In fairness, the previous mattresses that I have owned were not the greatest, hence the reason why I won’t compromise on comfort in bed anymore. Not only that, it’s easy to add to your bed, the instructions come on a QR that is attached to the topper so you will never lose them, and the customer service is fantastic.

There you have it! Another product that I would recommend investing in to make your life a little nicer. Simba Mattress Topper gets a gold star and my seal of approval.
