A fun-filled family road trip is a great way to spend the holidays. Holidays are a precious time for families. Often work, school and hectic social lives can mean that quality time with the whole family is rare. Holidays allow you to switch off from the rest of the world and to make memories with our nearest and dearest. That is why, if you are planning a road trip, you want it to be adventurous and fun not torturous and strained. Planning can help ensure your time with the family is filled with fun and doesn’t end up putting relationships to the test. Here are some top tips to ensure your road trip goes to plan.

Entertainment
If you have young children you will know how crucial it is to keep them entertained. With modern technology children can happily sit in the back of a car for hours watching their favorite movie or playing video games. However, according to research, long periods of screen time can be detrimental to a child’s development. Consider having screen downtime and use old fashioned family games to distract them. An enjoyable audiobook aimed at your children may also be a good alternative to the screen and it may be a pleasant way for them to settle into a car nap.
Insurance
If you are crossing national borders or expecting to do a lot of miles on the vehicle then you should check your insurance cover. Look around to find insurance quotes that are affordable and fully insure you for the journey you have planned. Remember that you should always take out cover that protects you, your family, and your vehicle. You do not want to be lumbered with expensive bills if you are in a collision. Just because your trip is a fun-filled family road trip, it doesn’t mean that it can’t be safe.

Non-Car Days
Children need to be active and stretch their legs from time to time. It is wise to plan for a few days where you are not in the vehicle, to allow your children to burn off energy. Plan your route with some pit-stop days that allow you to explore on foot. A good example of this would be stopping in a lovely coastal village in Fife, before heading up to the Scottish Highlands. Try to find places that are well resourced in terms of activities and meals. You don’t want to stop off somewhere only to realize there isn’t anything to do and you will have to jump in the car to get some grub.
Emergency Supplies
Before you begin your road trip make sure you have some provisions in the trunk. If your car breaks down or even if you decide to take a detour, you don’t want your kids to be starving in the back seat. Pack some snacks and plenty of water, that way you will never be caught short, even if there is a change of plans.
Finally, remember that you should also pack emergency car supplies. Always carry a spare tire and some oil. A high-vis jacket and emergency triangle or cone may also be useful if you breakdown on a busy stretch of road.
