5 Things You Need to do in Belfast

Belfast is one of those places that is known for its past rather than its present. We have come a long way from the Troubles and nothing shows this better than the tourist industry. Welcome to Belfast! And here are five things you need to do in Belfast when you come to visit.

Visit the museum

It shouldn’t be surprising that I am suggesting going to the museum, I love the museum! The Ulster Museum in Belfast is one of my favourites. There is a huge collection of inactive exhibitions that the kids will love to explore. There are loads of great art exhibitions to see, plenty of history to explore, and great gardens to sit and picnic in. The Botanic Gardens are beside the museum and are a favourite place for people to sit and chill when the weather is good.

Visit Titanic Quarter

There is a saying over here when it comes to the Titanic, she was alright when she left us! The word Titanic has become heavily associated with tragedy over the last 100 years and captivated the imaginations of millions of people. She may have set sail from Liverpool but she was built in Belfast. The giant cranes of Harland and Wolff make the area of the shipyard and are a familiar sight in the city. They didn’t build the ship but have built plenty of other big boats over the years. This is also the area that is home to a million first dates for people who meet up on a Belfast dating site because there is so much to do. The whole area has been revamped to make it the perfect place to visit as a tourist.

It shouldn’t be a shock to learn that some of the best finds are at the markets. My personal favourite is St Georges Market on a Sunday morning. There is a huge selection of local makers and merchants that offer amazing products. I have been known to spend a lot of money there. Don’t get me wrong, the city centre has a great selection of shops but go to the markets to see what the locals have to offer. I don’t think there is anywhere else in the world that you can buy a petrol bomb candle. You can also find loads of local food stalls, but be warned, the cupcake stalls always sell out early!

The pubs and bars

I have been called an alcoholic on social media so many times because of the culture I come from, which involves being to neck a beer within a couple of seconds. My husband’s record is around 2 secs for drink shooting. But that isn’t the point here. The point is, we have a lovely selection of bars and pubs that aren’t big chains. There are still plenty of family-owned bars and restaurants. This is perfect for some Belfast dating nights out. Ok, maybe my idea of a fun night out is hitting the bars, but it’s the people that make it a good night.

Take a bus tour

If you want to see the city, and get a good layout of the land, take a bus tour. There are plenty of open-top bus tours to show you about so you won’t have to wait about for a guided tour. If you don’t like the idea of whizzing about with the wind in your hair and a little voice telling you what to look at, you can try one of the normal buses. Belfast recently upgraded the bus service to include the Gliders. These purple road trains work just like the underground in London except you can look out the window all of the time.
