When it ended || Short Story

Diary entry- 02/01/2035

I want to take some time to reflect on what has happened over the last few years. 2019 is when it all went to hell and you need to know why. Or, maybe I just need to get this off my chest. Future generations deserve to know what happened.

In 2019, after Trump was impeached, arrested, and convicted, America descended into a civil war. No-one could believe how corrupt he was. His followers believed it was a frame job, a fix-up, and fake news, despite most of the evidence coming from his own mouth at White House press briefings and his own tweets. His followers led an uprising against the “Deadbeat Dems”. Regular people began to flee the country, and those who were left behind had to fight for their lives. This marked the beginning of the end, but it was the incident in India that really ended it all.

Nobody knows what happened or what they were testing, but there is now a massive hole in the middle of India. Some people think the implosion was caused by electromagnets, others think it was black-hole technology. Whatever it was, there is no trace of what happened. No data, no radiation, no India. The shock wave sent tsunamis and earthquakes around the world. Entire islands were destroyed. The polar ice caps shifted and fried some of our technology. Giant ice sheets split from the poles and melted. Both of the poles are less than 1/10 of their 2000 size. As the sea levels began to rise, the saving grace was the massive hole in India was able to take a large part of the displaced water, however, coastlines were still changed or erased completely.

China was hit pretty bad, so was the east coast of Africa and the Middle East. Russia decided to mobilize troops to seize land. They didn’t have any nukes to threaten the world with anymore, they were all gone. The Soviet storage facilities were all underground, and all it took was a series of earthquakes to destroy the stockpile of weapons. Boys as young as 12 were ripped from their homes, had a gun shoved into their hands and a uniform slapped on their backs. China was Russia’s main objective. The Russia/China War is technically still going, even though there is hardly anyone left in that part of the world.

Canada shut its borders. So did the UK. Boris finally got his Brexit dreams fulfilled. The EU left its borders open for any refugees but there weren’t many. It was kind of them to assume many people survived. The International Space Station witnessed everything and beamed it around the world to watch. Now they are the space command unit for the World One Organisation. World One was formed together by Canada, the EU, and the UK as a united army. Countries didn’t exist anymore. The name was nothing more than a cruel jab at how these were the only First World Countries that were left.

What was once the Sahara Desert, is now a massive green space, a prime place for farming. World One laid claim to the area and took control of it all, essentially taking charge of the world food supply. Busloads of able-bodied men went “down south” to work on the farms. My husband is one of the drivers. The drivers are not your average bus drivers. They are highly trained, heavily armed, and will not hesitate to end you. The buses have a habit of being attacked so they don’t take any chances. Because of his job, we have a special status in the community. You could call it wealth but it’s state-controlled wealth, and I would give it all up if we could just go back to what it was before. When the dust had settled, we realised how badly we had been hit. The population of Earth had gone from 7 billion to 2 billion. But losing one life through this disaster was one too many.
