Let’s Go! || Devon

Who needs to spread their wings after being stuck at home for months? Yeah, you aren’t the only one. Lockdown has been tough on everyone, and for different reasons. All anyone wants to do right now is take a trip to forget about the last few months. But, seeing as international travel is still looking a bit iffy right now, why not consider a stay in the UK. Let’s head to the south-west of England and explore Devon.

The countryside

The Devon countryside is incredibly beautiful, which is great; but there is plenty to do and see in there that is free! Who doesn’t love a free day out? Spending time in the country might not seem like the most amazing thing in the world, but after the last few months of being stuck in one place, the vast open-air and waves crashing on the beach will invigorate your soul and bring you a sense of calm and peace. Within the countryside, you will find plenty of old castles and ruins to explore. The famous Buckfast Abbey is in Devon so you can grab a bottle of their famous wine when you visit with your new friend from a Devon dating site. However, it isn’t just honey that the monks make. The entire Abbey is self-sufficient and is responsible for bee-breeding, honey making, and has a gift shop where you can buy things that were made in the Abbey or from other churches from around the world.

History

Of course, I’m letting you know about the history of Devon, I did write a history book after all. And Devon will not disappoint my fellow history buffs, especially if you are a fan of military history. During World War 2, it was a highly active area for training and active troops. One of the most notorious failures of the War happened off the Devon coastline. Exercise Tiger was supposed to be a training exercise to prepare troops for the D-Day landings, but the noise and activity alerted the Nazis that there were ships in the area. What followed was a blood bath. Nearly 1,000 American troops were killed as the Nazi E-boats, but the worst part was the incident was covered up. For years, some people didn’t know what happened to there loved ones, and it was only after a Devon resident, Ken Small, discovered what was lying on the sea bed, and he made it his life’s work to have the truth made public and have a memorial put in place for the families to grieve.

Food for the Foodie

One of the most surprising things about the UK is the vast differences in cuisine. Devon is no exception and is known for its meats and diary. Ever heard of Devon cream? Or Devon ice-cream? If you have never experienced Devon ice-cream, you can buy it in plenty of good supermarkets. But, as with most things in this life, it’s better trying it closer to the source. Meeting up with someone from a Devon dating site must be fun, especially if you are trying to organise a meal out, there is so much to choose from! If you have trouble choosing from the local Michelin starred restaurants, don’t even get me started on the cider, the beer, and wines that are made. I could be here all day, listing off places to go. I will say this, you would be hard pushed to find somewhere that wasn’t good to eat or drink.
