The Plot
On their one year anniversary, Tom and Violet get engaged while on a rooftop of the restaurant where Tom works. But things start to go off the rails when Toms best friend, Alex, sleeps with Suzie, Violets sister during the couples engagement party. Their one night stand leads to a pregnancy and a quickie wedding between Alex and Suzie. The plans keep getting pushed back when Violet lands a job in Michigan and they have to move across the country. Tom isn’t happy in his new life and Violet knows, but they keep on in their relationship. The strain gets too much for them and they split up. But when Violet’s last remaining grandparent dies, Tom flys to England to be there for her and the family.
Thoughts on the Story
This is a feel-good comedy that shines a light on the realities of being engaged these days. There is so much pressure to set a date and have the perfect big day, and it’s exhausting! It also shows how hard it is to be a couple. Both Tom and Violet had their idea of what a dream job is, and both had to make compromises. Life can get in the way of planning a wedding. Although this is a comedy, it definitely shines a light on the tough choices that couples have to make today.
Fin
One of the moments that stands out for me in this movie is random. The moment that the head chef slices the top of her finger off. My husband was a butcher (he is now a removal man) and he nearly hit the ceiling at the sight (and thought) of that knife going through her finger. Jason Segel and Chris Pratt make the perfect duo as best friends, while Emily Blunt and Alison Brie are the perfect sister combo.
