I tried to listen to Audible for an hour every day to see what would happen

When it comes to getting smarter, reading is supposed to be the number one thing to do. But who has the time to sit and read? Enter the audiobook. But what would happen if you listened to Audible every day for an hour?

Why listen to Audible?

Reading is one of those things that we all would like to do more of but we don’t have the time. But why should we read more? I’m so glad you asked. Reading can reduce stress, improve your knowledge on different subjects, make your vocabulary bigger and better. The benefits of listening to audiobooks are similar, and combining the two can have a massive impact on learning. But, let’s face it, we are all busy, so listening to an audiobook is the best option for those of us who have their hands full.

What was the experiment?

For this experiment, it was simple. All I needed to do was to pop Audible on every day for an hour while I was doing the housework. I was given the idea by my mum and my brother. My brother is a joiner and when he is working he likes something on for background noise. He was fed up with the radio so decided to download Audible for a change. That was a few years ago, since then he has clocked up hundreds of hours listening to audiobooks. My mum told me about his love of audiobooks after seeing an advert and pondering if she should download it for herself. My mum never downloaded it but I did. That was about two years ago and I never looked back.
The problem is, although I enjoy choosing books and adding them to my wishlist and downloading them, I rarely get a chance to listen to them. The only time I have managed to listen to a book consistently was when I was walking up and down the road to do the school run. So, I made the decision to pop Audible on for an hour while I was cleaning or ironing. With having kids in the house, I couldn’t just pop my headphones in (as tempting as it is) so I invested in a soundbar so I could actually hear what was being said. As much as I love my iPhone, the speaker is rubbish for listening to music and audiobooks.

How did it go?

This is one of the best experiments I’ve done so far. Not only was it easy to do, but it also made doing the housework a lot easier (check out my cleaning hacks post for more info on that). I tend to pick educational or self-help books so I was hoping I would learn something or grow as a person. I really love The Great Courses, there are so many to choose from and each chapter (or lesson) is about 30 minutes long. All you need to do is listen to 2 chapters a day and you could complete a course within 2 weeks. Imagine how much you could learn in a month or even a year!

Will I stick with it?

This was one of my favorite experiments and I will definitely be sticking with it. This is a really good use of your phone and your time. You will be surprised how much you take in if you focus just a little bit of attention on what is being said. I know that listening to educational or self-help books isn’t for everyone but there are loads of other titles that are available. I will be sticking with the non-fiction section and I’ll probably listen to the titles that I have over and over again.
