While we all know that having children is not some mystical thing, we can all tell the difference between someone who’s got children and someone who hasn’t, for the most part. If you are someone who is considering having children or is fully on the way, let me show you a few things they don’t tell you about having kids.

You Need to Have a Lot of Energy
We might have all seen those tired mothers out and about and think that a couple of bad nights’ sleep a week is completely manageable. But the fact is that lots of parents have children that don’t sleep throughout the night, not for days or weeks, or even months; sometimes it’s years of disrupted sleep. If you are thinking about having kids, you need to know that your sleep pattern will be altered for years.
Your Life Will Change More Than You Realise
Whether you are going through a fertility consultation to see about your options or you are trying to get pregnant naturally, it’s easy to say that “life will change,” when we talk about having kids, but lots of people greatly underestimate how their lives will change. People who have children can instantly find that their priorities change, but they think that they’ll be able to keep something of their old life in place, but this, for the most part, is not true. If you want to be dedicated to your children, you’ve got to make peace with the fact that a few things in life will fall by the wayside, whether this is some friends or even a hobby of yours. We all deserve that balance in life, but when your children are young and they need you for everything physically and/or emotionally, you need to make peace with the fact that your life is changing incredibly in the short term, which can be a lot to handle.
There Will Always Be Challenges
Having a child is an amazing wake-up call because it doesn’t just force you to start functioning with so few resources, either in terms of your energy levels or your ability to concentrate. But as your children get older and they start to sleep through the night, you will know that other challenges will replace those, whether it’s bullying at school or your child is becoming incredibly difficult because they’re trying to adapt to changes in life. Rather than thinking that as soon as you get over one challenge, everything will be peachy, instead, it’s far better to remember that life, in general, is all about those challenges. And rather than avoiding them or struggling with them, we should meet them head-on.
They Will Change Quicker Than You Realise
Sometimes we can make the mistake that when we start raising a child that we treat them like they are a certain age when in fact they’ve completely progressed beyond this. We need to keep adapting our parenting skills and styles and this is an amazing lesson in the fact that life will continue to progress beyond how you think it will. Time will fly and they will make so many changes before your very eyes and this is an astonishing thing to see. If there is one thing every parent agrees on about having kids, it is that the time flies by too quickly.
