Plan ahead
This might sound like a great idea but you would be surprised how many people think they can throw their stuff into a couple of boxes the week before they move and it will be ok. It is never ok. A few months before you know you are going to move, you need to start clearing out the rubbish. Go through all of your items, clear out the stuff you don’t use or need. Anything that you want to keep, needs to be stored safety until moving day. Some people like to box stuff up and store it in a garage or attic. Some people like to go that extra mile and store this boxed up stuff in a storage container. As the moving date gets closer, you should box up more and more of your stuff. This might mean having to go without certain items for a while but it will make the day of the move a lot easier.
Use a good firm
The last time I moved house, I had a company to help me. I might as well have done it all myself. sure they had a big lorry to carry my stuff, but I ended up emptying half of the lorry by myself. Plus, whatever they lift out, they sat on the pavement and had to be told to bring it into the house. Always check out the reviews for house removal companies because you can’t be sure if they are going to do what you need them to do. It also helps if you use a company that knows the area that you are moving to. For example, using a London removal company for moving in and out of London is a good idea. Why? Because they are used to the layout and traffic systems that could send other drivers into a state of shock.
High quality packing materials are a must
If you have a lot of stuff to move, you will need some high quality packing materials for a few reasons. One, if you are packing up the stuff you don’t use first, it will be sitting about for a while. Low quality boxes can fall apart and degrade very quickly. Plastic storage bins are always a great idea because they can be repurposed and used again. Good quality cardboard boxes are a great way to store and move things. Once you are done with them, they can be recycled easily at your local recycling depot. If you can’t afford a heap of moving boxes, banana boxes from the local supermarket are a great way to carry shoes and books from one place to another.
Speak your mind
At the end of the day, you are the one moving house and the people who are helping you should listen to any concerns that you have. It doesn’t matter if The man van is being paid for by you or your brothers girlfriends second cousin twice removed is doing you a favour. This is your stuff, this is your house move. Your life is being put into boxes and transported to a new place. If you have any concerns about any part of what is happening, speak up. This does not mean that you have an opportunity to be horrible to the people around you for no reason. Be clear with your expectations and how you expect them to help you.
And breathe
This is your reminder to breathe. Moving house is stressful for a number of reasons but it will be ok. There are things that might be misplaced but you might find them again. It will be a rush on the day but it will be easier if you have everything boxed up. Relax and remember that you want stress-free moves. Once the boxes have been moved, everyone has left, paperwork has been signed, and all of those other little things that need to happen on moving day, stop. Order a take-out, grab a Starbucks, and breathe.
