Here is What You Should Know About Raising Teens

As a parent, you have seen it all, right? The long and sleepless nights when your baby couldn’t close their eyes, cluster feedings, your baby rejecting healthy food, and the never-ending tantrums. Teenagers Know Everything and You Don’t

If you know and acknowledge that you don’t know some of the things that your teen is doing, then this is proof as far as your teen is concerned. When raising your teenager, you should get used to a life filled with snorts and eye-rolls. However, this is short-lived and they will come around before they’re 25.

They’re No Longer the Little Munchkins

Remember those cheeks that you always felt like gobbling up? Well, they’re no longer the same. It was easy when they were younger and had their favourite TV shows, colours, best friends, and movies. Everything becomes chaotic when they become teens. The only way to survive the teen years is to embrace the change.

Start the Hard Conversations

Remember how easy you could talk to your kids before they reached puberty? It was easier to talk to them about their favourite colours and their favourite foods. While not all conversations were easy, you wouldn’t feel uncomfortable talking to them like you will now talking about serious issues like college application or even sex. Now, even a simple casual conversation could end up as an emotional minefield. While it can be stressful to talk to your teenagers, it’s important that you understand that teenagers today deal with the hard stuff, and you as a parent should create a safe environment for them to talk to you about the hard feelings they’re experiencing.

Here is What You Should Know About Raising Teens

Be Prepared for Messes

Most teenagers have the habit of not making their bed, throwing their coats on the floor once they walk into the house, and leaving their pants wherever they take them off. Sometimes, your teenager’s room will also smell. However, this isn’t hormonal change but laziness.
At other times, your teen will eat very fast or overeat because of their bodily changes, which is normal. But it can sometimes result in heartburns. Therefore, be prepared with heartburn tablets when raising teenagers.

Set a Good Example

Most teenagers don’t consider their parents as role models because they think they’re judgmental. This is why you should be respectful towards your teenager even when you disagree. Start by creating an open relationship, spend time with them, and teach them how to cope with stress. As a good model, there is a high possibility that your teen will follow your lead.

Bottom Line

It can be challenging to watch your teenager grow and make mistakes. However, when they do make mistakes, your over-involvement won’t help. Instead, you may want to keep your calm and listen to your teenager. Above all, remember that they’re in charge of their lives, and it’s their journey, not yours. That said, your role is not to interfere with their life but to help them feel safe and seen.
