Everything You Need For Your Long-Term Travel Dreams

Many experienced travellers know how to make travel more convenient, but this usually applies when taking a quick trip with a small amount of time off work. While it’s good to get away for a week or two, you might have bigger and bolder ambitions. Perhaps you’ve just finished university, or you’ve saved up enough money to quit your job and do whatever you want. Whatever the reason, it’s time for you to embark on your long-term travel dreams and adventures.

Yet this is not always so simple. You know what you need when you’re taking a trip to the beach, and things become more difficult when you are looking at a longer trip. So, how can you plan and pack for an extended globetrotting experience? Here are some essential travel tips to consider for your long-term travel dreams.

All Your Documents

You won’t get very far without all your essential documents. For starters, this means your passport, and you should make sure you have enough time on it before it needs renewing. Most countries require passports to be valid for at least another six months, but as you’re taking a long-term trip, you may need to renew your passport if you aren’t sure how long you’ll be away. Even if you have an entire year, you could be travelling for eight months, which may not be enough to get into certain countries.

Besides your passport, you’ll also need to research visas and entry requirements. You can find a list of countries where you don’t need a visa, and this is the case for many countries as long as you’re not staying longer than 30 days. However, you never know what could happen, so it could be worth getting a visa for countries that intrigue you. You can also learn where the immigration office is if you need to extend your visa.

You will also need to look into vaccinations. The likes of Hepatitis and Yellow fever are two common requirements for the most popular travel and backpacking destinations like Southeast Asia and South America.  Don’t allow your long-term travel dreams to be cut short because you have caught something.

Suitable Clothes For Any Destination

It can be tricky to pack when you aren’t sure where you’re going, but you can at least make packing simpler by choosing sensible clothes that should be suitable for any destination. Consider clothes you’re likely to wear on any holiday, such as bathing suits, shorts, and loose, breathable tops. This should give you a decent base set, but it isn’t all you’ll need.

As you may encounter various climates and weather conditions, you’ll need to think ahead. You don’t want to be caught trekking through the jungle during a monsoon, so bring a waterproof jacket. Likewise, hiking boots and comfortable shoes (ideally running shoes) is also a good idea to combine with your flip-flops.

You shouldn’t need a puffy winter coat, but some long sleeve shirts, jumpers, jeans and trousers can keep you comfortable if you arrive in a country with different seasonal patterns to what you’re used to.

Electrical Must-Haves

You aren’t finished packing when you’ve picked out all your clothes, though. You’ll also need to remember the electrical essentials that will keep you looking your best and stay connected to the world back home during your trip.

It’s best to start with the basics. While many destinations, hostels and hotels will include hair care appliances, it’s always worth investing in a good pair of hair straighteners and a hair dryer, as this will make it easier to look your best even if you find yourself in the middle of nowhere. Plus, you may make friends easier, as you’ll be the gal with the suitcase full of treats.

Besides beauty products, you’ll also need a device to stay in touch with your friends and family. Your phone is an obvious essential, while a tablet (or e-reader) or laptop is also useful. If you’re planning to make some money while you travel, you can use your computer to write, design, or even work remotely (as long as you don’t let your boss know you’re on the beach sipping a pina colada).

A Basic Plan (But Not One Set In Stone)

Every adventure needs a plan. Otherwise, you go left and right without any purpose, which means you could miss out on the sights and sounds you’d always wanted to see. If you’re travelling for the first time, you will be eager to see everything, but experienced travellers will tell you this isn’t always necessary. You’ll quickly realise that the logistics are just not possible, whether due to time or money. Because of this, you need to be flexible and understand what you can miss ensuring you see as much as possible.

Having a basic plan will help you get from A to B to C and beyond, but this doesn’t need to be set in stone. You can use A as a base and travel around the area to see different sights before you return to the airport or bus station to take you to your next base.

You may also bump into people who have a plan that excites you. If this is the case, it helps to be flexible and adjust your plans accordingly. You don’t need to follow them to the ends of the earth, but you can still join them for a chapter in your adventure.

Comfortable and Functional Luggage

Whether you use a backpack or a suitcase, you need something to help you lug your clothes and other items from one destination to the next. Whichever you prefer, it needs to be comfortable and functional. Large backpacks with at least 50 L capacities are ideal as they allow you to carry much more than you think while freeing up your hands. But suitcases can be more convenient as they are easier to pack and unpack if you spend a while in one destination.

The luggage option you choose can directly impact how successful your trip is. It all depends on what you prefer. Hostel hoppers will always choose their backpack and couple it with a smaller backpack, while those looking for something more mature won’t mind dragging a suitcase around wherever they go.  Remember, these are your long-term travel dreams, so pick what works for you.

Something to Record Your Adventure

Recording your trip means you can look back in many years and remember where you went, what you saw, and who you met. There are plenty of ways to record your adventure, whether you find the best travel journals, use a polaroid camera, or record every second on a GoPro. You can couple this with a travel blog that might even help you find a passion for something, and if you’re looking for ways to make money, this blog could be the perfect way to do so.

Even if you think you’ll remember everything, you won’t, so just a few notes about the places you went and what you saw can be enough for you to write more later. You can take pictures, as that will make it easier to inspire your memory if you’re struggling for details.

Around The World

Whether you’re going high or low, hot or cold, or want to see where the world takes you, these travel tips should offer everything you need to stay organised and comfortable and ensure you have the best time of your life. You never know, this long-term travel dreams and adventure could turn into something even longer, because no matter where you go, there is always much more to see.
