I’ve been at this small business thing for a while, *cough* nearly fifteen years *cough*, so I know a thing or two about trying to grow your business. Here are some of the things I have discovered over the years that might help you to grow your own small business so it can go toe-to-toe with the big brutes of business. Warning: this might get a bit deep with the philosophy behind business but it is worth it if you want to take your small business to the next level.
You gotta spend money to make money
When starting off our small businesses, we all knew there would be some sort of price to pay. We knew that our equipment was going to be pricey, that the stock might not come from the cheapest supplier, or we didn’t understand the different avenues to save money. And after our first few hiccups that nearly put the business in the dirt, we became reluctant to spend money. Don’t worry, it happens to all of us. But there comes a point when we have to spend some of that hard earned cash and invest in our business again. This is really important if you want to scale up but it doesn’t mean spending money for the sake of it. When it comes to spending money within your business, make sure you are investing in the right things, that means people and equipment.
Time is money
Theophrastus, the ancient Greek philosopher, famously said, “time is the most valuable thing a man can spend”. Benjamin Franklin later used the related phrase “time is money”. Both are right. Time is valuable. It is the only thing we can’t get back, so spend your time wisely. There is no point in building a business that has you chained to your workspace 24/7. I’m going out on a limb here and taking a guess that one of the reasons that you decided to go into business for yourself was to have control over your time. If you feel that you are wasting your time on busy work, it might be time to look into automating some of your workload with Industrial Vision Systems. If you want to take your small business to the next level, you need to consider these options and follow through with them if they will work for you. If your business has a good cash flow but you are stuck in the office constantly, it might be time to think about how you can lighten your load.
Knowledge is true power
If there is one thing I will never stop banging on about, it is knowledge. Even if you lost everything tomorrow, you would still have your knowledge to build it back up again. This is a fact. I have seen countless people fail because they didn’t know what they were doing and then whine about it. As I said at the start of this post, I have been in business for nearly fifteen years. Do I have all the answers? No. Not at all. But everyday, I get out of bed and try to learn something about the industry I work in. I didn’t get to the ten year mark, throw my arms in the air and proclaim, “I’m an expert”. The world is changing. Social media shapes our lives, AI is on the rise, and how we do business is evolving. Take inspiration from TikTok and spend some time in the day, even a small chunk, to learn something about your business and how it interacts with the world. Buy and read the books, follow industry leaders on social media, and never stop learning about the business and the world that you live in.
