The ’90’s was one hell of a time to be alive and I’m so grateful that I was able to experience that time as a teenager. But these days, amid the doom and gloom that seems more like the 1980’s the spark of revolution has ignited again. It’s not surprising as we seem to have a 30-year cycle that keeps repeating itself. Don’t believe me? Read on to learn about the themes that pop up every 30 years. This time, it’s bigger and better than ever.

Girl Power
The Spice Girls were one of the biggest bands in the world despite releasing 3 albums. Scary, Ginger, Baby, Sporty, and Posh took the world by storm with their messages of female empowerment. In the 1960’s, there was a massive surge in protests for women’s rights, access to the Pill, and the right to a fair wage. And going back even further, the 1900’s was the time of women’s suffragette, the movement which would give women the right to vote. The 1930’s was a different kettle of fish as the movement was not just focused on women’s rights, the against fascism that would ultimately plunge the world into World War 2.

What about now?
Girl Power has taken some massive strides in recent years as women battle to level the playing field once and for all. Girl Power is now focused on allowing women to do whatever they want. From careers to fashion, to their right to choose what happens with their bodies, Girl Power is taking the world by storm once again. And just like the 1930’s, women are taking the message across the world to campaign for the rights and the safety of each other, regardless of race, age or economic status.

Rise of Technology
The internet was only starting to gain traction in the ’90’s with a dial-up connection that needed to use the phone line. If you are curious as to why Millennials stay up late online, it’s because our parents would only let us on after 9 pm when nobody would be calling. The first computer consoles and the mouse came about in the 1960’s. The 1930’s, despite being the time of the Depression, still saw new innovations coming out, including Scotch Tape and chocolate chips. The 1900’s was a time of big changes with the invention of the tractor, air conditioning, window wipers, and motor powered aeroplanes.

What about now?
Technology slowed down for a while during the beginning of the century as the internet took over and everyone focused on their virtual world. We were supposed to have things like flying cars and holidays in space by now. While these things seem like a pipe dream, they could be a reality within the next 10-20 years. The nostalgia of the 90’s is definitely coming back with the Concorde plane coming back to the skies in late 2019 or early 2020. Why is this important? Flying New York to London at Mach 2 in 3 hours 15 minutes is a very big thing.
Peace and Love
If you think of the 1990’s, you will probably think of this like a Peace sign and protests about the environment and war. Sound familiar? Protests are starting to get popular again to help change the world to be the best version of itself. Peace and love is more than protesting against “The Man”, it’s about life experiences and choosing things that money can’t buy. Travelling the world and learning about different cultures was the thing to do.

What about now?
I’m not gonna lie, it was the 1990’s when I last felt the need to protest, but I’m starting to feel the urge again. Peace and Love, or “The Liberal Agenda” are getting a lot louder today with people calling for the equal treatment of people around the world. The rise of social media means that anyone can report on the injustices that they see in the world and people can ensure real change for the better. The recession has made it nearly impossible for us to buy our own homes, so once again people are opting for a nomadic lifestyle.
Food
With food being an abundant thing in the 1990’s for a lot of people, it’s not surprising that people started to pile on the pounds. Snack foods were easy to buy but hard to burn off. Thanks to the increase in technology, nobody was as active as they were a few years before. But they all tasted so good! There were rumours that companies put drugs into their foods so that people would keep buying them.
What about now?
Since the 1990’s, snack companies have started reducing the about of fat and salt found in their foods. Walkers Crisps reduced the amount of fat by changing to sunflower oil from palmolein, a by-product of palm oil. To help protect the environment, they are starting to turn the tide on single-use plastics with new packaging that should be in use by 2025. And for a real 1990s throwback, Walkers have teamed up with the Spice Girls once again. Talk about reliving the past!
