College is something that everyone thinks about, and if you want to get ahead in this world you need to have a good education. But is getting a college education all it is cracked up to be?

I will put my hands up and admit that I am an older millennial and my daughter will be heading off to college in the next few years. As we look at the overwhelming list of possibilities that are infront of her, I can feel myself getting sick to the stomach with the tidal wave of info that is thrust our way. She’s still just a kid, she doesn’t know exactly what she wants to do with her life. Her favourite colour changes from day to day, so how can she be expected to make a lifelong commitment to a career that she might hate in a few years time? Or worse, what she if does a mountain of training and study, gets herself into a mountain of student debt, and then her chosen career is made obsolete by machines and artificial intelligence? Don’t look at me like that, it could happen.
The world and the workforce is changing at an incredible pace, there is a good chance that a lot of jobs will be made redundant. So would it not be better to have our kids train in other ways, ways that we know will be safe and in careers that will never disappear? My brother trained as a joiner, I could point at a tree and say, “make me a kitchen”, and he could do it. Whether or not he would is another argument entirely. The longest he has ever been out of work is 30 minutes. There are very few people in this world who can roll up to work, see the place is being shut down before their eyes, and have another job before they have even left the car park again.
I’m not against college, I went there myself, but in recent years I’ve spent more time unemployed and looking for work than is believable. I have loads of qualifications, the certificates sit in a pretty little folder that I take with me to job interviews to prove I’m a clever cookie. But there comes a point when I sit back and wonder if all of those hours of study were really worth it. Especially when you are going up against 100 other people for the same job who have the same qualifications as you.
When it comes to college, be sure you are 100% on board with what you want to do. This is your life and you need to be able to get a job when you leave. And, I’m including myself in this one, some people would be better off skipping the college experience and getting straight into the workforce and saving a few grand in student debt.
