Students get stereotyped all the time. Ask any non-student what they think students are like and they’ll probably say something along the lines of students being slovenly party animals who sleep all day. There’s not usually much mention of actual studying.

Of course, stereotypes exist for a reason and some students do live up to the unflattering picture that can be painted of them. So, at the risk of further stereotyping students in this article, here are 5 different types of student you’ll meet at university.
The slacker
In every degree course in every university, there’s a student who makes you wonder why they’re even there. They come in late to every seminar or lecture, they fall asleep in class and never hand their homework or assignments in on time. They’re non-apologetic, it’s never their fault and they just don’t seem to care if they pass or fail their degree.
The drama queen
Everything’s a drama to a drama queen (the clue’s in the name, right?) They overreact to every little crisis (that isn’t usually a crisis) and everything’s such a nightmare to them. They’re soooooooo busy and they just can’t cope with how much they have to do. Hopefully, you only have to put up with them in class or in the corridors or canteen and you don’t have to actually live with one in your student accommodation.
The class clown
Every university course has its clown. You know the type – the one who turns up at seminars in pyjamas or a onesie and never takes anything seriously. Everything’s a joke to them and if they’re asked a question, that gives them even more of an excuse for a one-liner, slogan, catchphrase or smutty innuendo. The class comedian can be fun but they can also be a bit tiring and disruptive.
The party animal
Often, the party animal is a hybrid of the slacker and the class clown. Their extrovert nature can make them hyperactive in class on the rare days they haven’t been partying the night before but the morning afters can mean they stroll in late and fall asleep halfway through a seminar. You’ll also be able to spot the party animal by the club stamp they haven’t washed off their wrist yet and the lingering alcohol fumes.
The loner
You may not have spotted the loner, as the whole point of being a loner is that they keep themselves to themselves. The loner turns up on time and sits quietly at the back, not drawing attention to themselves. If the loner has done their loner thing properly, they’ll get through the whole three years at university without anyone even knowing their name.
Different types of students you’ll meet at university
As I said at the beginning, students come from all walks of life and you’ll meet many different types of people on your degree course. However, stereotypes exist for a reason and the above are a few types of student you’ll undoubtedly meet at university. For the most part, these people are few and far between. What we do know for certain is that you will meet plenty of different people and lifelong friendships will be made during your time there.
