10 reasons why being married during lockdown is the best

We have all been under some form of lockdown by now. In places, the restrictions are being lifted so that life might start up again. The problem is, there might be a second wave in a few month’s time. At least we can be prepared for the second wave if it comes (hopefully it won’t). Here are my reasons why I will be spending all future lockdowns with my husband. Being married during lockdown was a tough time for some people. But for others, it showed how great being married is.

You have some company

This has been a tough one for a lot of people who have been isolated from their friends and family, especially if they are at high risk. For a lot of people, shielding has been a lonely experience.  Despite not being able to see our friends and family, the only human contact I have had is with my husband and our children. If I didn’t have them, I would have been very lonely.

Sharing the burden

I think we can safely say that the COVID-19 mess has been stressful for everyone. There were so many unknown factors, new information was constantly coming at us. Regardless of where you sit with your mental health, this has been a trying time. Having someone to share the mental burden has been a lifeline to people. There is nothing more reassuring than having someone to bounce ideas off, even if neither or you know what is happening.

You have more than just company

Trust me and my dirty mind, but you all know this. I’m sure you have all heard jokes, probably told by your dad or grandpa, about how one or more children was conceived because the electric went off or there was nothing on the TV. If you haven’t, lucky you. As tasteless as these jokes are, I’ve seen plenty of memes about an influx of babies being born in a few month’s time because everyone is locked inside. To be fair, they aren’t wrong. If I’m feeling “bored”, I can just poke my husband instead of logging on to an Isle of Wight sex site.

You may discover stuff about your marriage

This is a tough one for people, and loads of people are finding this out the hard way, but you will probably find things out about your significant other that you didn’t know. In some cases, people are jumping ship and abandoning their marriages after some discoveries. Others are finding a new sense of intimacy that they never knew existed. Being confined has meant more opportunity for communication and honesty.

Boredom buster

I may have already mentioned “boredom”, but what about actual boredom? When you have someone else in the house, it can help prevent boredom. And if you find yourself lounging about like a teenager from the 1990’s, there is someone to help motivate you into doing something. You might not fancy doing that 10,000 piece puzzle that your nanny gave you for Christmas but doing it with someone else might be fun.

You have someone to help with the kids

If you are a parent under lockdown, it has been tough. High five to the single parents doing it all on their own! I’ve had a husband to help, and my eldest is a tax-paying adult, and it has still been a drama! However, if it wasn’t for the extra set of hands in the house, I would never get peace to pee, never mind get a shower! Trips to the park, babysitting from the grandparents, and school, have all been canceled. Those usual outlets are gone for now. And, until they come back, we need to rely on the others in our house when it comes to parenting.

Finally getting through that to-do list

We all have that “couples to-do” list, and now is a great time to get it done. Need to clear out those cupboards and throw stuff out? Check. Wanna plan out the garden or the next steps for the house? Check. To be clear, they are things that you could do yourself and haven’t because there is another person’s belongings that are part of the equation. You can’t throw out their stuff just because they won’t take part and help. You can’t repaint the house in your favourite colour if they will hate it. So make those decisions and get that to-do ticked off as much as possible.

Date nights are interesting

When I was lucky enough to get a babysitter for the kids and head out, date night was always kind of rubbish. We only had a couple of hours to rush through dinner and a movie before we went home. It wasn’t a relaxing experience. Instead, date nights at home are the new going out. Now we can order in (thanks to contactless delivery methods), stick a movie on (cheers Netflix), have a bottle of something, and not have to worry about rushing home before my father in law falls asleep on the sofa.

Plan the future

For a lot of couples, this will be the perfect time to examine what you are doing with your life. If you find that your partner’s web history has www.bedfordshiresexsite.co.uk more than you are comfortable with, it is something that you can have a talk about. However, it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom. This is the perfect time to discuss what the future means to you. Have you been drifting along? What is it you really want? You can decide if you want to stay in the stay house or move across the world to the place of your dreams.

If you get sick, there is someone there

I suppose this is the obvious one but I think I need to say it. With my husband being an essential worker, he is at risk. If he got sick, I would hate to think of him dealing with it by himself, even if I can only look after him at a distance of two meters. The same goes for me. I had a chest infection at the beginning of the lockdown (we still have no idea if it was Covid-19 or not because testing wasn’t available and I didn’t need hospital treatment) and it was rough. Without my husband there to hold my hand and tell me that I was probably being paranoid, I think I would have keeled over with the stress.
