In a time of reboots, we are seeing plenty of old favourites being reimagined for a modern audience. Charlie’s Angels, a show that was hailed as a feminist turning point for how women were portrayed in the media, has been updated again for the modern woman.

Although the last attempt in 2011 fell flat, the 2000 version came out at a great time and was well received. An all-star cast of Lucy Lui, Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Bill Murray took the wheel of this smash hit, but how does it hold up against the sands of time? Let’s be honest with ourselves, it doesn’t. It is the ultimate cheese-fest with a serious amount of over-sexualization of some of the hottest women in the world, who (despite having an incredible set of skills) are reduced to flirting and flashing their bodies to get out of situations when they could use their expansive skill set. With this all in mind, here are a few reasons why we need the new Charlie’s Angels movie, but why we should still hold a special place for the 2000 version.
Like I said before, in the 2000 version, we saw some of the biggest actresses in the whole flash the flesh in a world of spies and crimefighting. If you watch the beginning of the movie, you get a bit of background about each of the women. One is a nerd, one is a rebel, and one is a rich kid. Each of these life paths brings a wealth of experience and education that would make your toes curl. However, the only toe-curling comes from seeing these strong, smart women being reduced to showing some side boob when men are around. But when it’s just the girls onscreen, the sexy stuff is downplayed and we see more of what they are capable of.
Being the best version of yourself is something that is always downplayed in the movies. Sure we have had films where we have a social misfit who is battling against the status quo and fights for acceptable to explore who she is but it never really shows you the after. It’s not often that we have a movie where it skips past the hard parts and shows the end rewards. I know they do exist but they are few and far between. The funny thing is, if you were to ask a woman why she does something, whether it is learning a new language or how to bust a mans skull open in the not so unlikely event of being sexually assaulted ( a 1 in 6 chance in the USA), she will/could openly wonder why she is doing it. It might be hard to believe but Charlie’s Angels showed us what we could do with all of those “useless” skills. When you are finished mastering one skill, you move on to another, and before you know it, you are a badass female with more tricks than a circus clown.
It’s not a secret but it’s something we often forget, we are stronger together. I would say trust me on this but you only need to look around you to see the positive impact that a group of women can have. All across the world, women are banding together to help and support each other. When it came to the vote for same-sex marriage in Ireland, thousands of American women flew to Ireland to supoort the vote. Women support women. When the abortion laws in America began to affect women’s access to treatment, women threw open their arms and their homes to help the people who had been affected. Women help women. In certain parts of the world, little girls are married off young as child brides, are taken out of school, and are being subjected to things that would make sure that you never slept again if you could see it with your own eyes. Women fight for women.
The new Charlies Angels movie will showcase the strength of women in a new way that will inspire the next generation to learn martial arts, several languages and enough engineering so that they can make a weapon for self-defense from the stuff in their handbags. And this is exactly what the 2000 version did for me and my Angels.
