The Plot
65 million years ago, a comet is flying through the Solar System and misses the Earth, leaving the dinosaurs to live in peace. Years go by and the dinosaurs are the dominant species of the planet. Over the years, the dinosaurs have farms and can herd cattle. One family of dinosaurs have their homestead and work the land. Arlo is the runt of the family and lives with his parents and his brother and sister. His father decides to give Arlo the responsibility of looking after the grain silo, something that Arlo fails at when a feral caveboy breaks in and eats the supplies. Arlo can’t bring himself to kill the small critter and chases it off. His father isn’t pleased with this and makes Arlo go after it and causes a chain of events that will make Arlo become the good dinosaur for the rest of his days.
Thoughts on the Movie
I was surprised by the number of references to death and killing in this movie, normally kids movies try to avoid such big displays of violence and threat. Not only do we have dinosaurs attacking and killing other animals, but we also have them verbally threatening each other with murder. Is this a bad thing? No, not really. In a world where we are being accused of sugar coating stuff and glossing over death, it is kind of great to see a bit of cartoon violence that has been done in such a way that it doesn’t avoid death but won’t scar your kids for life.
Fin
I really liked this movie, especially seeing how the movie is a bit more gritty than the normal kid’s film. The Good Dinosaur has plenty of highs and lows (and is rated a PG) so it might not be the best movie for some sensitive children, there may be tears. But then again, I grew up with The Land Before Time and Watership Down and I turned out normal enough. This is definitely not your typical cookie-cutter movie and it does lack some of the humour that we are used to seeing in a Pixar movie, but it is still a great one to watch on a wet Sunday afternoon with some popcorn.
