The Plot
It’s been 60 years since the war with aliens left the Earth uninhabitable. Jack and Vika have a mission, to protect the generators that power for the human colony on Titan, one of Saturn’s moons. Jack is haunted by memories of being the Empire State building with a dark-haired woman from before the war, despite having his memory wiped. Jack has the job of repairing the battle drones that protect the generators from the remaining aliens. During one of his patrols, he discovers a signal that is going to outer space being transmitted from the remains of the Empire State building. He decides to take a break at his secret lake house and sees a spacecraft crash. His curiosity takes over and Jack discovers what really happened after the war.
Thoughts on the Story
The story is based on the graphic novel Oblivion by Joseph Kosinski. The story is unique compared to some of the sci-fi movies we have today but definitely draws on some of the classic elements that made sci-fi so intriguing in the first place. The design of the set and the props is filled with clean lines and doesn’t have an unnecessary fluff to make it appear more “space age”. It is this attention to detail that makes the story seem more realistic.
Fin
This might not be one of the greatest sci-fi movies in the world but that doesn’t make it a bad movie. A lot of the reviews were mixed when it came out but I believe that was down to the different pace. Normally we have sci-fi movies that are action-packed, filled with gunfights and grotesque aliens that would be better fitted to the monster/horror genre. This is a slower pace movie that deals with the question, “what would happen after?” Oblivion is worth a watch if you like sci-fi but could do without the danger and possible heart attack.
