There are a lot of people who get fed up with the daily grind of their job and would like something new. Maybe they have a business idea that has been brewing in the back of their mind for a while, or maybe they just hate their job. Whatever the reason, heading off to be their own boss is on their mind for many different reasons.

Before we head off down the rabbit hole, I would like to take this moment to point out that I am a business owner myself and I have some experience in this area. Am I an expert? Absolutely not. However, there are a lot of things that I have noticed over the last few years that I can shine some light on. This might not be the greatest advice in the world but it will definitely give you some things to think about when you are thinking of starting a business.
One person show?
In the wake of the pandemic, there are a lot of people who have decided to go it alone with their business adventure. And this is great. Not only are you relevantly free to make your own decisions, but you also don’t have to worry about the staff. The flip side of this is that you are left to do everything yourself. For some people, this is perfect as they can fit their business around the rest of their life. On the other hand, it can be lonely during the workday. Even if you have a job that requires a lot of your focus to be on the task at hand, you still might want to talk to someone on your lunch break.
Organisation skills
There is a lot of talk about getting organised in your business, and I’ve taken a lot of courses from “business gurus” to know that this falls into two categories. The first is doing the work. There are a lot of people out there who complain about not being organised but they fail to do the work that needs to be done. you can write do to-do lists until you are blue in the face but it won’t get the work done. It can be a tough pill to swallow. The second type is people who get caught up in the busy work to do the other work. There comes a point when you need to think about organisation skills outside of to-do lists. There will be things within your own industry that could be considered essential to your job. This could be anything from automotive vision systems to industry-specific pens. Yes, they are a thing.
Have a plan
As someone who started off without a plan, let me be the one to tell you that you need a plan. Yes, it can be fun stumbling through the ideas and mistakes of starting a business, but it is better with a plan. Not only will you be a lot more organised, but you will also find success a lot quicker. Don’t be afraid to get a plan, even if you have been in your business for years. I finally made one last year in the hope that I could get organised, and it worked!
Thinking of starting a business can involve a lot of big decisions. If you have decided that 2022 is the year that you will take the plunge, I tip my hat to you and wish you all the best on your journey as the Big Boss of your own life.
