What is a pest?

Lets start out with what a pest is (and isn’t). A pest is defined as something that causes destruction. For example, slugs can be a pest as they like to eat certain plants. However, slugs also eat dead and decaying plants. So, as annoying as they might be, they are useful. The same logic can be allied to bees, they can sting you but they are responsible for pollinating flowers and plants. Fleas, rats and bedbugs on the other hand, are real pests who can spread disease and cause a lot of pain. These are the type of pests that need to be controlled and removed by professionals like these offering Rat Removal, amongst other pest control services.

When should you get help for your pests?

Sometimes, despite all of your best intentions, you still end up with a pest problem. Seeing one bug doesn’t mean that there is a pest problem but it is worth keeping your eyes peeled. Mice and rats are a different matter because of the diseases that they carry. They also suffer from incontinence so they pee and poo as they walk around your home! Calling pest control services is your best course of action as they reproduce very quickly. Mice can have a litter of 4-6 mice and have 5-10 litters per year, rats can have 3-14 babies per litter and have around 6 litters per year. This means that 2 rats can make around 1,250 rats in a year!

How to prevent pests

If you are not a fan of using chemicals and traps around your home, there are other ways of handling pests before they get out of hand. There are a few ways that you can take control of the situation and stop pests before they invade your home. Most of these things you probably do anyway but it always helps to know that you are stopping invaders from entering your home.

Clean your home

Having a clean home is one of the easiest ways to control pests of all kinds, especially insects. Regular vacuuming the floors and removing dust is one of the simplest ways to prevent mites from making a home in your home. However, washing your bed and vacuuming the mattress can help prevent bedbugs. Make sure that you invest in a good hoover and stay on top of your home. You might find that you need to vacuum more often if you have pets to help keep dust and hair at bay.

Seal up cracks

Pests need a way into your home, and if there is a crack in the wall that gives them access, you can be sure that they will make use of it. It can be tough to work out where the cracks are in your home, but worth that extra effort. Besides, sealing up your home can also prevent heat loss and save on your energy bills. This is one of the best ways to keep your home pest free, and it means keeping them out.

Remove food

You don’t need to throw out all of your food, but you do need to ensure that it is sealed up. Kitchen cupboards and packets are the best way to attract bugs and bigger pests into your home. You don’t need fancy jars to store your stuff in, just some Tupperware will do the job. However, if you do want to organise your cupboards and make them TikTok ready, there are plenty of cute jars and containers for you to buy.

Take out the rubbish

Wherever you are living nowadays, there is a good chance that you are being encouraged to separate your food waste from other rubbish. The idea to remove food waste to stop it from going into a landfill is a good one, but it does mean that some of us are storing spoiled food in our kitchens for longer. Because of this, many kitchens are attracting swathes of flies looking to eat, breed and spread dirt around our homes. It’s crucial to use a service for rubbish removal brighton (or indeed one elsewhere more relevant) so that you keep on top of this. Emptying your bins everyday removes any chance that pests will be drawn into your home, it’ll also prevent any funny smells from cropping up in your living space.

Ventilation

Having a fresh home means throwing open the windows and getting some fresh air in. Not only does this help keep your home fresh by allowing the stale air and moisture out, it can help to prevent mould and fungus from growing. Allowing the windows to open for around 30 minutes a day is all that you need to help make the air quality in your home a lot better. Some insects and pests thrive in damp homes, so get those windows open. If you feel that you need a little extra help, invest in some damp traps to help prevent moisture from gathering in your home.

As you can see, there are a few different ways to keep your home pest free. If you can think of any others, let me know in the comments and I’ll add it to the list!
