A quick guide to home organisation

Keeping your house in check is not an easy task. Home organisation can be tough but if you can get it moving in the right direction, it can make your life a lot easier.

Declutter

This is one of those things that people really struggle with, getting rid of things that are taking up space. You need to have a hard look around you and decide what sparks joy or not. There is a chance that a lot of the stuff you have in your home is there because you have forgotten about it. Clear out those drawers that you never open, donate those clothes that you have no intention of wearing, and get rid of anything that is past its time.

Everything has a place

Having a place for everything can make your life a lot easier. If you have found a lot of sentimental items during your declutter, find a space for them that will keep them safe. Put loose photos into albums with notes of where they were taken. Organise items into memory boxes that will ensure they stay in good condition. As for the rest of your stuff, have a space for it. It will make your life flow smoothly if you know exactly where your stuff is.

Chore list

Sometimes having a list can help you stay on top of things. For example, I know that on the first of the month there are a lot of jobs to be done. This includes doing a clean cycle on the washing machine and the dishwasher, the windows get washed, and the garden paths get a scrub. Once a week, the bed linens get washed, the house gets dusted, and the bathrooms get a good scrub. Daily tasks are smaller (but there are plenty of them) and they include running the vacuum over the house, loading the dishwasher, making the beds, doing loads of washing, and cleaning up quickly. Make a chore list that will work for you and your family.

Meal planning

If there is one thing that will make your life a lot easier; it is meal planning. Working out what to make for dinner every day can take a toll on your mental health. I moved out on my own 20 years ago and have been responsible every night since for food going on the table. It is exhausting! Meal planning has helped remove that mental load because I know what I am making at least a week in advance. I even got a white board to ensure that everyone in the house knows what they are eating. If they don’t like it, they are buying the takeaway then.

Find your routine

Getting into a routine can do wonders for your mental health. I posted a few times about creating a routine that works for me. Is my routine perfect? No. Do I follow it exactly everyday? Also no. However, once you have a routine and try to stick with it, eventually it will become second nature. You can have a routine for everything! Your morning routine to ensure your day starts right, your cleaning routine so that your house is never dirty or disorganised, and a work routine if you work from home.

Time management

There is no point in having routines, planners, and lists if you can’t fit it all into your day. I spend 1 hour per day cleaning my house. That’s it. That is enough time for me to make the beds, run the hoover over, lift any bits and pieces that have wandered from their place, load the dishwasher, and throw on a load of washing. This might sound excessive but having a time limit and sticking to it means that I get more done. If I gave myself all day, I would take all day doing this simple tasks.
