You may argue that the kitchen is the most important room in a house as that’s where the cooking happens and if we don’t eat, we die, but sleep is of vital importance to our well-being. Without sleep, we can’t function properly and our mental health suffers.

In order to get a good night’s sleep, our bedrooms need to be a place of tranquility and comfort. So, if your bedroom is more of a building site than a boudoir but your finances are more in line with Argos than Anthropologie, below are a few ways to update your bedroom on a budget.
Change your knobs
Bedroom furniture can be expensive but you can totally change the entire look of your bedroom furniture just by changing the knobs and handles. And if you’re renting and you don’t want to risk your letting agents in east London, or wherever it is you live, asking why there are ladybird knobs on the chest of drawers where once there were plain wooden ones, you can change the knobs back when you leave.
Cover your bed with a throw
If your bed linen is a bit old and shabby and you can’t afford to update it to something fresh and new, cover it up with a colourful throw, blanket or quilt. Or non-colourful if you’re into that grey, Mrs Hinch vibe.
Cover your floor with a rug
Along the same lines of brightening up your bed with a throw, putting down a colourful rug on the floor is a lot cheaper than buying a new carpet or hard floor. It’s a lot more convenient too as you won’t need to move all the furniture out of the bedroom or take a day off work to put down a rug.
Be warned though, if you’re looking online for a rug, there are so many to choose from, you’ll probably end up never buying one.
Clean and tidy up
This tip for updating your bedroom on a budget is so budgety it won’t cost you a penny (unless you have absolutely no cleaning supplies in, which is unlikely. Even the slobbiest of slobs have stuff under the sink with which to occasionally clean.)
Declutter your bedroom – tidy all the shelves and surfaces from jars and tubes of lotions and potions, put your hairdryer and straighteners away, then give your bedroom a good clean and vacuum and the result will be a fresh bedroom with a completely different feel to it.
Change the lampshade
Changing the lampshade is a small, but effective way to update your bedroom on a budget. You could even make your own lampshade with a lampshade kit and fabric of your choice but, to be honest, this wouldn’t necessarily come under the brief of ‘budget’ unless you can persuade a fabric-hoarding friend to part with some of their stash.
For an extra upgrade to your lampshade, have a think about buying a vintage-style lightbulb to go with your new lampshade. Again, this doesn’t particularly come cheaply (let’s face it, nothing with the word ‘vintage’ attached to it comes cheaply) but it’s a great way to add a bit of pizzazz to your bedroom.
How to update your bedroom on a budget
As you can see from the above, there are plenty of ways to change the look of your bedroom without spending a fortune. Don’t forget to check out charity shops, Facebook marketplace and ebay for some real bargains. One person’s trash is another’s treasure, after all.
