Overcoming the Pesky Weight Loss Plateau

Overcoming the Pesky Weight Loss Plateau

There’s nothing worse than a weight loss plateau. It makes you feel like all of your hard work eating healthily and exercising often has been a waste of time; it makes you feel like throwing in the towel completely and many people do just that.

It’s kind of understandable, but it isn’t a good idea to just give up, especially when that is likely to mean putting the weight you have lost back on and really making your hard work count for nothing! No, it’s far better to take sensible measures to overcome that plateau and get back to it – here’s how:

Reassess Your Calorie Requirements

We all know that you need to cut your calories to lose weight, but many of us don’t realise that, once we’ve lost some weight, our bodies are smaller and therefore require fewer calories. So, it makes sense to continuously reassess your needs, especially if you’ve hit a plateau, to see if you’re taking in too much. A good BMI calculator will help you with that. Do this and it might be all you need to get you over the hump.

Up Your Fibre Intake

How much fibre are you eating? If you aren’t consuming at least 30 grams per day, before you consider booking yourself in for liposuction to get rid of that last few pounds of fat, you might want to think about upping your intake instead. If you eat at least 30 grams every day, it will fill you up to the point that for every gram you consume, on average, you will consume 7 calories fewer throughout the day effortlessly, and that could help you to get those scales moving once more.

Be a Cheat

For the most part, I wouldn’t advise having diet cheat days because they slow down your weight loss and they can lead to bingeing if you aren’t careful. However, if you’ve hit a plateau and you simply cannot overcome it, it might be worth eating a carb-heavy meal that will let your body know that you aren’t starving, so that it will be less likely to hold onto every calorie you consume. It does this by increasing your leptin levels which help you to feel satiated faster.

Switch Coffee for Green Tea

If you’re one of those people who simply has to have a caffeine boost throughout the day, swapping your coffees for green tea could help you to get over the hump and shed a few more pounds because green tea has been found to contain catechins that blast away fat, particularly around the belly, which means you probably won’t have to go for those fat freezing treatments to remove that muffin top after all. Oh, it tastes amazing with a little lemon, too.

Lower Your Sodium Levels

Of course, it might just be that you are burning fat, but you are carrying excess water weight. Eliminate as much salt from your diet as possible ( you need some to be well) and see if the scales move. If they do, you can safely assume that you’re taking in too much sodium! Soon the scales will be shooting down!
