How To Stay Cool In Your Home During Heatwaves

Heatwaves are starting to become more and more common, meaning you spend a lot of your time melting into a pool of liquid in your home. Being outside in the heat is sometimes a lot easier than being inside because you may have a breeze to cool you down, some shade, etc.  But, managing heatwaves at home can be a lot harder than expected – as you’re probably finding out this year. So, here are some tips to help you stay cool:

Invest in AC or some fans

If you can afford it, invest in an air conditioning system. You can actually buy portable AC units these days that don’t require any installation and look like dehumidifiers. They do a fantastic job of cooling down your home with some nice cold air. If you can’t afford them – they can be expensive – then a fan or two will do a similar job.

Open your windows but close the blinds

Keep your windows as wide open as possible all throughout the day to let air into your home and prevent it from becoming an absolute sauna. But, ensure that the blinds remain somewhat closed when the sun is it. You don’t want the sun beaming into your home as this heats it up and you see no benefits of an open window. Block the sun from entering your house and it will be a lot cooler during the heatwave.

Sit outside if you can

If you have a garden area, spend as much time outside as possible. Sitting indoors can be ghastly during a heatwave, so enjoy the fresh air and keep yourself in the shade. It may even be worth installing pergolas or awnings in your back garden to provide some added shade and protection from the sun. Here, you can sit and eat with your family, do some work at an outdoor table, and so on.

Dress appropriately for the weather

It sounds obvious, but don’t dress like an imbecile during a heatwave. You’re in the comfort of your home, so you can pretty much wear whatever you want. If you want to do the housework in a bikini, you can! Try to wear as little as possible to stop yourself from constantly sweating. If you’re walking around in joggers and a sweatshirt, you’re going to melt and then evaporate into thin air.

Avoid hot showers

Try your absolute best to avoid turning the hot water on during a heatwave. Or, at the very least, have the heat as low as possible. Hot or warm showers are terrible when it’s boiling outside. They fill your home with extra heat and don’t cool you down. Become accustomed to cold showers as they make you feel much cooler while preventing loads of steam and condensation from making your home warmer.

There you go; how to survive a heatwave in your home. It’s not particularly difficult when you look at the tips laid out like that. But, it will require some added investment on your behalf, particularly if you want fans or an AC unit. Still, as heatwaves are going to be more common, these are investments that are well worth it.
