Once upon a time, if you went for some fast food you were doomed to eat something fatty and bad for you. The fast-food industry has woken up in recent years and now offers healthy choices for its customers. The food is still fast but now it can be healthy. Here are some of the healthiest meals to order the next time you head out.
Starbucks Chicken and Hummus Bistro Box
A salad that is sealed in a box might not seem like a good option but at 270 calories, who could say no? This salad is packed with vitamins including 10% of your daily iron intake. The fat in the box is healthy fats, no trans or saturated fat. A good, healthy salad box to go with your full-fat double mocha heart-attack in a cup.
Burger King Whopper Jr
The Whopper Jr is a little bit smaller than the grown-up version. And because it is Burger King you can have it your way, so ask for no mayo. Adding a side salad to the meal instead of fries will keep the fat and calories down. And don’t forget to ask for extra salad in the burger too.
Chipotle Vegetarian Burrito Bowl with Brown Rice
The burrito bowl can give you a lot of options so choose wisely. Skip the cheese and mayo, and add guacamole instead. Fill your bowl with veggies and choose the brown rice for extra fibre. When it comes to ordering sides, stick to a diet soft drink instead of chips and dips.
McDonald’s McChicken Sandwich
A McChicken Sandwich from McDonald’s isn’t as high in calories as you think. At 272 calories per portion, it won’t hit your hips too hard. To reduce the calorie amount, ask for no mayo. To improve the vitamin levels, order a side salad and pop that in the sandwich.
Taco Bell Fresco Chicken Soft Taco
This soft taco has a really low-calorie count at around 140 calories. There is only 3.5g of fat and 10g of protein. Leave out the cheese and top with salsa for some extra flavour. Or if you really fancy some cheese, adding that on top will only take it to 300 calories.
Chili is full of beans and tomatoes so if you take the cheese and crackers out of it, it’s actually really healthy. A large cup of chilli is around 250 calories and is full of protein and iron. It has a high salt level so don’t add any extra to your cup.
Subway Six Inch Turkey sub
A six-inch turkey sandwich can be as little as 216 calories. Subway gives the option of different types of bread so head for a whole wheat variety. You can choose how much salad you want on it for no extra charge. Don’t get any dressing on your sub or go for a low-fat option.
Panera Mediterranean chicken salad
Don’t let the calorie count of this salad put you off. At around 580 calories it might seem like a lot, but it is a salad. You are getting loads of protein and loads of fibre. The chicken is skinless which helps keep the fat content down. You can get it in a half portion too if you want to reduce the calories down.
Baja Fresh Grilled Wahoo Fish Taco
The fish taco comes in at around 240 calories. You could eat two of these and you wouldn’t hit 500 calories. This is served with a good sized salad stuffed into the taco and includes avocado. If you leave out the fried tortilla chips and add in some extra salad, then it will be even healthier.
KFC Chicken Drummers
As tasty as the crispy coating on the chicken is, it’s not good for your waistline. If you do find yourself in KFC, order a portion of drummers. By simply pulling the skin off, you will reduce the fat and calorie count. Most of the fat in chicken is found in the skin, so remove that and remove the fat.
Dunkin’ Donuts Egg White veggie wake up wrap
This wrap has a tiny calorie count of only 60 calories. The fat and sugar content is so low, it’s not worth talking about. If you team this up with a black coffee with no sugar, then you have a meal that is under 100 calories that has plenty of calcium. What a way to start the day!
McDonald’s Grilled Chicken Salad
Since McDonald’s introduced their salad menu a few years ago, the new healthy choices have been a big hit. The grilled chicken salad has the least amount of calories at around 120 calories and less than 1g of fat. If you need a bit of extra flavour, try the balsamic vinegar.
Taco Bell Fresco Steak Burrito Supreme
This burrito has plenty of good things in it. It has around 390 calories and 15g of fat but the steak makes up for it. The steak, beans and salad make a great combo of protein and fibre which is good for your body. Try it with a side salad to make sure that you are really full up.
McDonald’s Grilled Chicken Wrap
The grilled chicken wrap has plenty of salad packed into the tortilla wrap. The grilled chicken has the least amount of calories out of the McDonald’s wraps. Ask for no mayo in your wrap to keep the calorie count down. Not only will your wrap be under 300 calories but you will get around half of your daily protein.
Dunkin’ Donuts Tuna Salad sandwich on a bagel
This tuna is mixed with mayo so there is no escaping it. This comes in at a small 220 calories and had loads of iron, 20% of your daily allowance. As tempting as it is to pop some cheese on top, just stick to the tuna in the bagel.
