Your skin isn’t the best for any number of reasons but sometimes it can be one reason or a few different ones. Today is the day to take control of your skincare and ensure that you look your best everyday.

You don’t have a routine
This might come as a surprise to no-one but every part of your life can thrive if you have a routine, even your skin. I’ve posted a few times about the benefits of having an overall routine but your skincare is one of those things that can be skipped over. Why? We have so much to do, we forget! It doesn’t have to be complicated. When you have your morning shower, give your face a wash with some face wash. Once you have brushed your teeth, give a quick sweep with toner and follow up with a daily moisturiser. Boom! You now have a quick and easy morning routine! Of course, when you get a chance, you can add some face masks and eye creams into the mix, but this is a great starting point if you don’t have a routine in place.

You don’t remove your makeup
Leaving your makeup on at the end of the day is one of the worst things you can do for your skin. At night, our body goes into repair mode so your makeup needs to go. This does not need to be complicated. Simply give your face a wash, use some make up remover, and finish with a night cream. You might want to do make up remover first, then go in with a face wash, you decide what works better for you. If you are on a budget, you can use the same cream you put on in the morning. A lot of people might fight me on this but I think it is better than using no cream at all. The important thing is, get your face clean for bed. Not only will it help your skin stay clear, it will stop your bedding from getting dirty too.
What is your skin type?
Do you know what your skin type is? A lot of people don’t. The thing is, our skin changes throughout our lives. You might have suffered from greasy skin as a teenager and now have dry patches. Maybe you had clear skin until you turned 25 and then developed acne. Throughout your life, keep an eye on your skin and see if there are any changes. If your skin feels tighter, you could be developing dry skin. When you use blotting paper and see marks, your skin is oily. If you are not sure, you can visit your local beauty counter and they will be able to help you identify your skin type and the products you should be using.

You have been using the wrong products
If you don’t know your skin type, there is a good chance that you are using the wrong products for your skin type. Using the wrong products will do more harm than good so it can help to be mindful of what you are using. Don’t get caught up with the latest fads, and just because something worked for one person doesn’t mean it will work for you. I know I’m not the only person who has picked up the latest viral beauty product and am disappointed with it (trust me, I used to test A LOT of products in the Beauty Edit). Always check the label and the fine print to ensure that it will work for you.
You aren’t giving your products time to work
We have this terrible expectation that our lotions and potions should work RIGHT NOW! As much as we would all love to have instant results, it doesn’t work like that. The reality is, it takes around 28 for you to see any changes in your skin when you start a new routine. Yep, 28 days for the fine lines to reduce, 28 days for the oil to settle down, and 28 days for the tightness of dry skin to become a memory. Of course, results will vary from person to person. However, some products will appear to give an instant result. For example, using a face mask (I like Superdrug’s collagen sheet mask) can help reduce fine lines straight away. Will your wrinkles magically disappear? No, but they look a hell of a lot better after one use. The same result might happen after 28 days of using an anti-wrinkle cream.
If you are thinking about starting a new skincare routine, do your research, know your skin type, and stick with it for at least 28 days. Your skin will thank you for it.
