History
Did you know that the name “Suffolk” is a way of saying “the south folk”? When people can to the area, they started to call each other the north folk and the south folk. Over the years, the words blended together and were shortened to Norfolk and Suffolk. Isn’t that interesting? Here is another fun fact, the area is known for its painters who have been inspired by the countryside. One area in particular is known as Constable Country after the painter, John Constable. It shouldn’t be surprising that there are plenty of places with a deep history for you to check out.
Food
Suffolk has become known as The Foodie County because of the local suppliers and food producers. Aldeburgh Food Festival is a two-day event that brings thousands of food lovers to sample the glorious tastes. You can even take a workshop or two and expand your kitchen skills. One of the workshops is foraging, something which is becoming really popular in recent years. Can you blame people? Free food in the bushes? Sign me up! But it can be tricky, especially if you know nothing about nature. The last thing you want is to pick the wrong mushrooms for your spag bol.
Days Out
As much as I love food and history, my family will want to do stuff too. My kids are the type of kids that need to burn off some steam, and what could be better than with a day out. There are plenty of ways to get the kids moving (and tiring them out). For the older ones, there are a few different kart tracks that they can tear around. But if you fancy something a bit cleaner, there is a theme park with plenty of rides. But for all of you big kids out there, you can try your hand at parachuting. Yep. Throw yourself out of a plane with a stranger and have a mild heart attack.
Rest and relaxing
I said at the beginning you mind be looking for some peace and quiet (or maybe looking for somewhere for a nice date) and this is why. Suffolk is known for the spas and retreats. I know I mentioned the food but the spas are just as important. Especially after the holiday season. Anyone else need a holiday after dealing with their family? Raise your hands. I thought so. One of Suffolk’s big selling points is the peace and quiet that you can find in the spas. Just think of cottages without electricity or wifi, open fires, and a limited supply of running water. Bring some books, tea, and grab some food from the local shops, absolute heaven!
