Let’s Go! || Cambridgeshire

Lockdown is starting to ease around the world and people are itching to get out and about once again. That can only mean one thing, it’s time for a day trip! This time, we are heading to Cambridgeshire County to see what they can offer us as we leave the confines of our homes.

History

Of course, the first thing I thought of was “what museum can I visit here?” but there is so much more than museums. For one, you can find Flag Fen, one of the oldest known early settlements of the Neolithic era. But if you fancy exploring the modern history of the area, there are lots to discover from World War 2. There are museums filled with aircraft from the War including the largest air museum in Europe at Duxford. As you can imagine, the area is filled with ancient history with records going back as far as the Norman conquests so there is something to tickle any area of your historical interests.

Food and drink

Pack your napkins people, I’ve found some treats for your stomach here! If there is one thing that you need to know about England, it’s the love of food and drink. Cambridgeshire has a real love of the traditional British feast. There are plenty of places to taste test but you can take a food tour to make sure that you don’t miss any of the best places. However, wine drinking is something else entirely. Normally when I write something about the food and drink for one of these posts, it’s a general overview of what is available. This time I can tell you about the wine tasting courses that will ensure you can taste test your way out of any future Cambridgeshire dating event.

Nightlife

I’m not one for heading out to the pub (hello four children) but I could make an exception if there was a babysitter available after lockdown. Because Cambridgeshire is known for being a rural area, it’s not exactly known for its hot spots on the Cambridgeshire dating site side of the internet. It does have a Cambridge Folk Festive for a music festival with a difference. But, if you fancy something really different, you can take a punt down the River Cam at night and do some ghost hunting. Yep, you read that right. Let me know you get on.

Getting back to nature

It shouldn’t be surprising that there are plenty of green spaces in Cambridgeshire County. Like I mentioned above, you can go punting down the River Cam at night, but you can go during the day too. There is also the River Nene Valley, a nature park with cycle trails, water sports, or even a round of golf. Between the botanic gardens and green spaces, there are too many places to list here. You can even discover the Isle of Eels in Ely, an area that was once an island and surrounded by marshlands. This might not be current nature, but can we call this natural history of the area and consider it a double whammy? Yeah, let’s do that.

To study

This is the weirdest thing, so please indulge me for a moment. Last night, I had the weirdest dream, I was a student at Oxford University* and was on the rowing team. What does that have to do with Cambridgeshire? Good question, Cambridge University is in Cambridge, which is the county town for Cambridgeshire, and Oxford and Cambridge are old school rivals when it comes to the Boat Race. Ok, when I put it like this, it doesn’t seem as weird (except I was flinging insults at the Cambridge team as we had just whipped their buttocks!). Cambridge University is the second-oldest university in England (second to Oxford, ahem, as usual) and they offer a great selection of undergraduate and further study for those hungry minds. You can even take a walking tour of the colleges that make up the university.

*I have never studied at Oxford University but I now consider myself an imaginary alumnus.
