How To Cope With Trips To Cold Countries

At some point in your life, you’ll want to take a trip to a cold country, like Canada or Sweden. These places are known for their sub-zero temperatures for large swathes of the year.

But how are you supposed to cope with these frigid conditions? That’s the topic of this post. We look at some of the strategies you can adopt to stay warm and remain feeling positive (regardless of what the weather decides to throw at you).

Stay Moisturized

You’ll want to start off by staying moisturized. Drinking plenty and packing some lip ointment in your bag is a great place to start. Cold weather also tends to be quite dry in a lot of parts of the world, simply because you don’t get the same level of evaporation as you do at lower latitudes. As such, you can wind up with dry lips pretty quickly. However, staying moisturized is a way to get around this.

Plan For Shorter Days

You also want to plan for shorter days in colder parts of the world. Usually, you’ll be going to places in winter, so you’ll need to think about what you’re going to do if less daylight is available. Shorter days are great for sightseeing or skiing in the middle of the day. However, you might want to go with a flashlight or take a guide with you if you want to travel at night.

Protect Your Extremities

Another consideration is your extremities, or the parts of your body that are most likely to suffer with the cold. The body can sometimes shut down when temperatures plummet, making it harder to stay warm. For your hands, HeatHolders thermal gloves for women are a great option. These have special materials that retain heat and prevent the cold air from getting in. Thick socks and a snood are also worth investing in since these protect the feet and face, which will get cold even if you are wearing plenty of other layers.

Eat High Energy Foods

You also want to eat as many high-energy foods as you can in cold weather to keep your metabolism running. If you eat less than usual, your body will go into hibernation mode and it will be more challenging for it to produce the heat you need. Many northern countries have cultures of hearty meals, so you should be able to find something that suits you. You can also eat warming foods, like soups and stews, as these can physically warm you up and act like a thick blanket applied to your insides.

Protect Your Skin

Finally, you should also think about how you’re going to protect your skin in cold conditions. Not only is it at risk of cracking and chapping, but also getting burned by UV and high windsIf you are going to an area with a lot of snow, put on sunscreen. Otherwise, the sun could reflect off the ground below and burn you, which isn’t a pleasant experience. Also, wear glasses as glare from the snow can also be damaging.
