Pride month is with us once again and we are all looking for ways to celebrate. As an ally, I am always looking for ways to show my support. However, I somethings think that we could all be a bit more sensitive during Pride month. If you haven’t noticed, there has been a lot of chatter about businesses throwing the Pride flags up on their social media for the month and it is coming off as fake and insincere. We don’t rock that way over here and I want to keep the Pride support going all year round.

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have spotted my recent flower arrangements in my house. Yes, I have another new hobby (but this one smells great). With this in mind, I wanted to research which flowers could be used to create a Pride flower arrangement. Keep in mind that I have a bunch of fake rainbow roses from my wedding, but I wanted something different. So, I pulled together some of my favourite flowers with special meanings to create a magical arrangement.
Red – Roses
If there is one flower that is famous for being associated with love, it is the rose. Red roses are a symbol of true love, and I believe that everyone should be able to love whoever they want (as long as it is consensual). Adding some red roses to the mix is a great way to remember what Pride is about, the right to love whoever you want.
Keep in mind that roses come in loads of different colours, so it is possible to create a Pride bouquet with different coloured roses.
Orange – Gerberas
Gerberas are just like giant orange daisies and will look amazing in a bouquet of flowers. The orange variety represents friendship, joy and happiness. Just looking at these big daisy-like flowers is enough to make anyone smile. They also smell amazing and give off a strong scent.
Again, these come in different colours so you could have a Pride gerbera bouquet instead.
Yellow – Sunflower
If we have to add a yellow flower, I cannot think of a better one than a sunflower. These beautiful big flowers are a shining sign of friendship and good luck. Because of their size, you will only need one or two in order to add some yellow hues to the bunch. If a sunflower is a bit much, there are plenty of other yellow flowers to choose from.
Green – leaves
Adding some green leaves to your flower display can help to add some volume. However, they can mean more than just a vase filler. Depending on the type of leaves that you use, you can add some different meanings. Hawthorne branches add love and protection. An olive branch can symbolise peace and friendship. Or Irish Oak can symbolise wisdom and courage. For the green leaves, I would add a branch or two of what you think the LGBTQ+ needs right now.
Indigo – Forget Me Nots
Indigo is a mix of blue and purple, but for the purpose of this flower arrangement, I’m choosing a blue flower. The symbolism behind the flower is a fantastic one, as it symbolises true love and respect. If there is one thing that Pride is about, it is showing respect to the LGBTQ+ community. There were many people who died for their right to live their life authentically and we should never forget them.
Violet – Calla lilies
Are these flowers purple or black? The answer to that question depends on your mood. For me, the dark colour of the calla lily and its meaning is a great reason to include it. However, you can get black or purple calla lilies. The purple lilies symbolise loyalty and royalty, definitely fitting for Pride month.
To top this all off, pop them in a glass vase if you are a member of the community, or use a black and white striped vase to show that you are not a member but an ally. Of course, there are many different Pride flags and it is possible to create a bouquet to represent them. How about a bunch of pink, blue and white roses for the Transexual flag? Or pink, blue and yellow coloured gerberas for the Pansexual flag. You could even speak to BloomLocal to see what flowers would work best for your plans. Whatever way you choose to support Pride month, do it with respect and don’t forget to support the community all year round.
