Warfare is changing and governments around the world are changing how they fight. As technology moves forward, it brings new and exciting equipment. Here are 23 warships from the past, present and future, which are changing how wars are fought and won.

HMS Queen Elizabeth

This is the largest warship ever built for the Royal Navy. This aircraft carrier is capable of carrying up to 40 aircraft at a time. When the ship was designed, the emphasis was on being any to attack quickly. There is room is up to 250 Royal Marines with the ability to manoeuvre quickly and engage in times of attack. The defensive weapons systems include Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems and this system efficient for missile and aircraft attacks.

HMS Defender

This Daring-class air-defence destroyer type 45 is the fifth of its type built for the Royal Navy. The HMS Defender was designed for anti-air warfare. It has a Sea Viper (PAAMS) air-defence system. This can target many targets travelling at supersonic speeds. The Sampson radar system can track objects as small as a tennis ball. The defensive systems make it difficult to attack the ship with a saturation attack or a stealth attack.

USS Coronado

The USS Coronado is an Independent class warship from the United States Navy. This littoral combat ship was designed for coastal warfare. Its missions would include surface warfare, mine warfare, and anti-submarine warfare. This ship can reach speeds of over 40 knots or 70 miles per hour. The large flight deck can hold two Seahawks and an unmanned Fire Scout.

USS Zumwalt

This futurist-looking ship was named after Admiral Elmo Zumwalt and this ship was designed with stealth in mind. When it appears on radar it appears to be the same size as a fishing boat. This is impressive because the ship is 600 feet long and weighs 14,500 tonnes. This ship has vertical launching anti-submarine rockets as part of its weapons system.

USNS Spearhead

This ship has been in service for the United States since 2012. The ship can sail with 22 crew members but can take up to 41. This ship has been designed for non-warfare missions as well as combat missions. The ship can carry up to 312 troops for transport to combat zones and has been designed to be refitted quickly with different equipment. This allows it to be changed from non-combat to combat quickly.

USS Gerald R Ford

This is one of the United States Navy supercarriers. This ship was named after President Ford in honour of his service during World War 2. This supercarrier can hold over 75 aircraft on the flight deck. It is armed with the Evolved SeaSparrow Missile system and a Rolling Airframe Missile system. The ship is expected to be in service for 50 years.

USS America

This amphibious assault ship was launched in 2012. Unlike the amphibious assault ships of the past, the USS America does not have a well deck. This deck is normally found at the back of the ship. It opens and floods the back of the ship to allow smaller ships to enter the hull. Instead, this ship has a larger flight deck to carry Venom and Viper helicopters. It also has an onboard hospital and extra room for aviation fuel.

USS Anchorage

This is a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock used by the United States Navy. This amphibious transport ship can carry a landing craft or two hovercraft in its hull. It can also carry four Sea Knight helicopters or two MV-22 craft. Weapons include two rolling airframe missiles launchers. In December 2014 the USS Anchorage was used as a recovery vessel for the Orion Space Capsule.

Russian Corvette Boikiy

This small Russian warship has been used by the Russian Navy since 2013. Although a small ship, the Boikiy has two torpedo tubes for anti-submarine warfare. The Boikiy also has a helipad for a KA-27 helicopter to land. This ship weighs 2,100 tonnes making it light compared to other ships. This allows it to go close to the coast and give gun support for landing crafts.


This ship is part of the French Navy. It is an amphibious assault ship and helicopter carrier. The flight deck can carry 16 heavy helicopters or 35 light helicopters. Inside the ship can hold a tank, two barges, and up to 70 vehicles. Weapons on the ship include 4 machine guns and 2 compact autocannons. The ship also has a hospital to assist with NATO operations and peacekeeping missions.

French Frigate Forbin

This is a large frigate of the French Navy which is used for protecting larger ships. The Forbin is able to protect air carriers and civilian ships from submarine attacks. Weapons systems include missile systems for anti-ship, anti-submarine and anti-air attacks. The PAAMS radar system allows it to detect small objects travelling at high speeds. The design of the ship allows it to appear smaller on the radar for stealth.

INS Makar

This is a catamaran used by the Indian Navy. The ship was designed to take surveys around the coasts to provide more accurate charts for the Navy. Although this is the main purpose is charting the coast, the Makar can be used for other purposes. They can provide some coastal defensive and take part in rescue missions if needed.

CNS Kunming

This is a type 052D destroyer used by the Chinese Liberation Army. It is able to carry one helicopter and has a lot of different weapons systems. This includes vertical air to surface missile launchers and 6 torpedo tubes. Smaller weapons and machine guns are fitted for terrorist and pirate attacks. This is one of 12 destroyers planned by the Chinese Liberation Army.

CNS Linyi

This is a Type 054A Frigate used by the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army. It is one of 24 ships which will be used as a multi-role warship. It carries a Kamov ka-27 helicopter and a Harbin Z-9 helicopter. It also has a hanger on board for storing aircraft. Weapons include anti-submarine missiles and decoy missiles. The frigate has radar warning systems and missile jamming systems.

HMAS Canberra

This ship is part of the Royal Australian Navy. This ship is a helicopter landing dock which can hold up to 18 helicopters or 110 vehicles. This includes 4 landing craft to transport troops and cargo to the shore. Defensive systems include a Nulka missile decoy system to attract missiles away from the ship. There is also a radar system to detect air missiles. Weapons on board include 6 machine guns and a Typhoon weapon system.

HMS Agamemnon

This one of six nuclear-powered submarines planned for the British Royal Navy. The power source means that the submarine can stay underwater as long as there is a food supply. The cargo hold can hold around 3 months of food for the crew. The power cell is expected to last around 25 years. Weapons include missile systems and a warhead. The submarine is expected to be launched in 2020.

INS Vishal

This is a new aircraft carrier planned by the Indian Navy to replace the existing aircraft carriers in service. It is expected to be completed in 2023 and will hold a crew of 1,400. The ship will be powered by a pressurized water reactor which will allow it to remain at sea as long as there is a food supply. Weapons on board will include surface to air missile launchers.

BNS Riachuelo

This small attack submarine is currently being built for the Brazilian Navy. It will be around 75 feet long and travel at speeds of 21 knots. The submarine will be powered by diesel and electric motors. While underwater, it will use its electric power to travel and will need to surface to recharge its batteries. It will have 6 torpedo tubes to fire anti-ship missiles.

TCG Heybeliada

This corvette is part of the Ada-class of the Turkish Navy which has been in service since 2015. The stealth features of the ship have earned it the nickname “Ghost of the Seas”. Its main uses are patrolling and anti-submarine warfare. The weapons also include anti-aircraft and anti-surface missiles. There is room on the deck for helicopter launching and aerial refuelling.

JDS Hyuga

This ship is a helicopter carrier in service in Japan. It has been used by Japan Maritime Self-Defense force since 2009. It was brought into service after the Japanese Government believed that China and North Korea had a large fleet. Although it has many different weapon systems to defend itself, it has been used for rescue missions. It delivered disaster relief and supplies after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake.

SAS Mendi

This valour class frigate is part of the South African Navy. It weighs around 3,700 tonnes and can do 30 knots at top speed. There are multiple radar systems including one that can identify another ship as friend or foe. Multiple machine guns and vertical missile launchers provide protection along with a decoy missile system. It is able to carry helicopters and has a hanger on board.

HDMS Absalon

This is one of the biggest ships to serve in the Royal Danish Navy. It has been in active service since 2007 and assists with peacekeeping missions. In 2008 it was used as part of an anti-piracy campaign off the coast of Somalia. It is able to carry 2 helicopters at any time and has a hanger on board. 7 heavy machine guns are part of the weapon system.

HMCS Chicoutimi

This is a long-range hunter-killer submarine used by the Royal Canadian Navy. It was originally used by the British Royal Navy before being sold in 1998. Since then the Royal Canadian Navy have used it as part of its fleet. It is powered by diesel-electric engines and has 6 torpedo tubes. As it is an older submarine, it has bubble decoy systems. It is limited to shallow water missions now and will be used to guard around the shoreline for attacks.
