If we have discovered anything about kids during the lockdown, it’s that they might be able to occupy themselves for a while when we need to do a Zoom conference with our boss, but 5 months stuck at home can be boring. And while it is tempting to plonk them in front of the TV all day, we would all prefer if they would expand their minds. Today, I’m looking at Pete Johnsons new book, How to Change Your Parents into Superstars.

The book

Louis is back! If someone is going to be famous in our family, it should be me, right? After all, I was the one getting slapped in the face with a wet fish on Noah and Lily’s awesome vlog. Then, out fo the blue, they’re off to film in America and I’m dropped from their show! Of course, Maddy has a brilliant plan to put my comedy career back on track for superstardom, but there’s just one problem … my parents!

Thoughts on the Book

Packed with the laugh-out-loud and mischievous humour readers have come to expect from Johnson, fans of the series will not be disappointed. Johnson’s book couldn’t be better timed. With the covid19 lockdown, many children across the nation are needing places to escape to, adventures to be had and most of all, laughter – and what safer, better, or more fun way than through a book? After all, as Mason Cooley said, “Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are”.

Research has shown reading to reduce stress levels by up to almost 70%, and the positive benefits of laughter to our health and well-being are well documented. In a time of high stress and uncertainty, laugh-out-loud books like Johnson’s are just the tonic. Louis is back in the sixth book in the popular Louis the laugh series. Kids can jump right into this book without reading the previous ones (but they will certainly want to go back and read previous books after if they have not already).

Overall

‘A teacher recently told me that her pupils are finding lockdown increasingly difficult and need laughter and reassurance more than ever, so I do hope that this latest Louis title brings readers some much-needed humour and escapism at this tough time.’ Pete Johnson. He’s not wrong. Over the last few months, my kids have become more and more restless. Thankfully, we have a garden for them to play in. However, there have been wet days, and days when the older one get bored of playing in a sandpit. Reading is a wonderful thing, and kids should enjoy what they are reading. Jack loved the book and can’t wait to discover the rest of the series.
