We live in a world that’s all about the shiny and new – it could be a new phone, new clothes, or new gadgets for the home, but whatever it is, and although there’s certainly nothing wrong with a bit of an upgrade from time to time, we’ve forgotten all about how great it can feel to repair something and just fix what we’ve got – that’s so satisfying, but it’s often the last thing on anyone’s mind these days.
The fact is that sometimes replacement isn’t necessary, and whatever the item happens to be just needs a little care and attention to be as good as new (or close enough). With that in mind, keep reading to find out more about what it’s okay to repair instead of replace.
It Still Works
You know that thing you’ve had for ages that still looks great and does exactly what it’s meant to do even if it’s seen better days? It could be a favourite pair of shoes, a trusty handbag, perhaps a jacket you really love, or any number of other things, but if it still fits, works, and feels like you, it would be a shame to have to throw it away just because of a bit of damage.
That’s the great thing about making repairs – it lets you keep the things that already suit you, rather than having to find something else. You should be able to fix a slight crack, a scratched surface, or a tear, for example, and there’s no reason to throw anything away if that’s the case. Sometimes you might need some expert help, such as with glasses reglazing, and sometimes you can learn to do it by yourself, but either way, you’ll get to keep the thing you love, and that’s the point.
It Feels Good
There’s something really lovely about the idea of repairing rather than replacing – it’s a kind of make do and mend mentality that was such a big thing in the past, but that’s often forgotten about – maybe it’s time to bring it back into fashion? You could learn how to sew on a button, or change a fuse, or darn a sock, and if you can do things like that, you’ll end up saving a lot of money and feeling very satisfied with your work at the same time.
Doing things like this isn’t about being sentimental or clinging to the past (although we’re also not saying you have to get rid of stuff just because it’s old – quite the opposite, in fact), but we are saying that it’s a waste to throw things away if they can be fixed and be as good as new. Of course, if you just don’t like something anymore, that’s different – but you could donate it rather than toss it, so you can still do a good thing.
New Isn’t Always Better
These days, we’re pretty much conditioned to believe that newer means better, but sometimes new just means different (or worse). Repairing, on the other hand, gives you familiarity that’s also functional, so why would you want to change it?
If you’re carrying out repairs because you want to sell, it is always worth asking whether it is worth carrying them out. Realtors can provide you with advice on this matter, including how much you should invest and what you should expect to pay. Ideally, they should be able to estimate the return on investment for you.
So the next time something feels a bit worn or starts to break down, why not ask yourself if it can be fixed rather than immediately deciding to replace it? You might be surprised at what you can save.
