It has been a long time since people felt safe enough to leave their doors unlocked at night, even in small towns. If you feel that you could do with a little security overhaul, I have some ideas to help you secure your homelife a bit better.

Check your locks
This might seem pretty simple but the locks on your doors might not be the best. I’m sure you have seen the picture doing the rounds online about the length of the nails that are used for door locks. But, there are some doors that are really easy to break through. For example, sliding doors can be easily popped off the rails even if they are locked with the built-in locking system. By adding an extra lock, you can make it a lot harder for someone to get access to your home. If you think you could do with a better locking system, speak to a locksmith and see what they recommend.
Secure your car
Cars are a lot harder to steal these days but that doesn’t mean that theives won’t give it a go. Once upon a time, all you needed was a metal coat hanger and a steady hand. Nowadays, cars come with all sorts of gadgets included but there is nothing wrong with adding some extras. A few of my personal favourites are a vehicle tracking system and a camera. A lot of cars come with camera for reversing but they don’t activate if the car is hit to record who smacked into your unattended vehicle. Plus, if you have a tracking system, you can easily track your car if it is removed from your property.
Use your phone
One of the least advertised aspects of our phones is the alarm systems or notifications that you can put in place. For example, if you tap the side button on your iPhone five times, it can all the emergency services. Or if you have an iPhone 14 or newer, you have the option of adding crash detection which will call the emergency services. These are just a few small examples about how you can use your phone to keep you safe. Every phone is different so make sure that you know how to use yours. The best information can be found on your phone manufacturers website, or send them an email asking about the features that they have added for your safety.
Secure your passwords
This might sound like I’m flogging a dead horse but nobody checks and changes their passwords anymore. I’m as guilty as anyone with this but recently I decided to change ALL of my passwords because I realised I was using the same passwords for 10 years or more. That’s not good. The reason this is so important is because a lot of the things we use are internet based. Even the smart locks and cameras in our homes can be comprised if we don’t look after our passwords. They should be changed at least once a year, always use a different password, and never share your details with someone.
And there we have it, some simple tips to help make your home and life a little more secure. Of course, if you feel that this isn’t enough, speck to your local police outreach, home security firms, and self-defence network to see if there are other things that you can do.
