One of these days, I will buy my own home and get to work to make it my own slice of heaven. But where do you start when it comes to home improvements? One of the first places I would start is the windows. Why? I can think of three reasons why you should upgrade your windows and the glazing of your home.
It can save you money
It might sound strange that investing a few hundred (or thousand) pounds in windows can save you money, but the benefits of new windows have been proven time and time again. For example, modern windows are made to order so they will fit the exact shape that you need. the design of the windows ensures the minimal amount of heat is lost. How? Between the two layers of glass, there is argon gas. Argon gas is a poor heat conductor so it is perfect for preventing heat from escaping your home. The savings can be anywhere between £150 to £300 per year depending on your house size. Year after year, this amount of money can add up to some huge savings.
They look pretty
The leaps in design that I have seen over the last few years has been amazing! Glazers and window fitters are making windows that are nice to look at and practical. From traditional sash windows to modern designs to fit in with the rest of your decor, the possibilities are endless. Gone are the days where you had to have white window frames (although if you like white, good for you) and there are a variety of shapes. You have probably seen plenty of fun designs on new houses being built or across the pages of interior design magazines. The windows of our homes are often after though but they don’t have to be.
Energy-saving and eco-friendly
As I mentioned above, when you have double glazing, the design of the windows makes it harder for heat to escape. During the winter months, you won’t need the heating on as much as the heat won’t escape from the windows. In fact, having properly fitted double-glazing can help prevent 680kg of carbon dioxide emissions a year. As well as keeping the heat in, they can help with air circulation. You might have lived in a house where mould creeps in. This can happen if there is not enough ventilation. It can be as simple as opening the windows during the day but when there is a snowstorm or the rain is coming down sideways, you might not want to open the windows. This can lead to moisture building up and mould growing places it shouldn’t.
The day that I get the keys to a house that I own, I will be thinking about the improvements that I will make as soon as I walk through the door. Apart from upgrade your windows, what improvements would you make first in your new home?
