Moving to a brand new place is such a worthwhile experience. You’ll learn new things, find out who you are and open up a world of possibilities and opportunities that you simply might never have had by staying at home. However, it’s a massive decision and something you’ll need to think about carefully before taking the plunge. Here’s what you need to know.

Researching the location
First things first, before taking the plunge and moving to a completely new place, it’s important that you do your research. If you’ve only ever seen the destination on tv, in books and online, you might well find that it’s not exactly as you pictured when you turn up so visit first to avoid disappointment. Even if you know the place well, perhaps you’ve holidayed there a number of times, bear in mind that it’s likely to be considerably different as a place to live as it is as a vacation destination. Go without your rose tinted spectacles- consider things like crime and safety, schools, jobs and socialisation. If the place you want to move to is overseas, you’ll need to weigh up things like living costs as rent, groceries, gas and more might all be priced very differently to what you’re used to. Making contact with people who either live at the destination or have moved there like you intend to can be helpful, that way you can ask them any questions that crop up. Read articles, for example, a ‘moving to Melbourne guide’ or a ‘living in Tokyo’ video could also cover a lot of issues that you might not have even thought of.
Finding a place to live
One of the most important things to get right when you’re moving abroad is finding somewhere to live. It needs to be affordable but also safe, many places in the world might not be friendly to people they consider ‘outsiders’ or you might become a victim of crime. Moving to a safe area or somewhere that other expats live will often be your best bet. You could either visit the destination ahead of time and set up a place to live in for when you arrive. Or you could book yourself into a basic hotel for a few weeks, and then you can take your time finding something that’s just right. Finding somewhere to live can be easy if you decide to rent somewhere first. If you decide that you will be staying somewhere for a long period of time, or you plan on having a permanent place in another country, buying a property might be a good idea. Buying a property outright can be tough so it helps to use Simon Conn to improve your mortgage for property abroad. If you’re going to be working in a new destination then you’ll need to consider something that’s nearby, so securing a job first might be the best way to go.
Moving your stuff
Finally, you’ll need to think about moving your stuff. If the place you’ll be living is far away, it might be worth selling much of what you own and buying it again when you arrive to avoid transportation costs. If you’ll be bringing pets with you abroad, you’ll need to find out what the process is and what kinds of vaccinations or quarantine they’ll need to undergo. If you have a vehicle, you’d need to consider whether it’s best to get it shipped over, or if it’s easier to sell and rebuy. If you’re moving to a big city like New York or London, there’s not much point in owning a car. These are all things to think about.
For years I have been thinking about the idea of going to live abroad. In Croatia. In Zagreb. It is the need for change, for a new challenge. Yet I’m still here. I would like to change but I can’t …
I have just moved back to England, from Spain, and brought my pet with me as well. I have been living abroad for almost 10 years and I don’t think I will ever return to my home country.
I’m a military spouse, so I’ve moved many times with my family. It’s always fun to check out a new place.
For years we have thought about moving to the USA, I would love to take that leap one day!
I love the concept of having an you life so I love to move because it’s a great way to experience other cultures especially the impact that you have with that culture.
Having moved from one city or country to another, I have experienced all the advantages as well as the disadvantages. The excitement, and thrill of knowing a new culture, people, language, cuisine are really worth going through the uncertainties, and occasional unfavorable moments.
I’ve always lived in the same area. How exciting it would be to start over somewhere new and exotic!
I’ve never done this but think it would be exciting. I was a young mom and we established roots early so I never really had the chance. Sad to say I’ll be an empty nester in just 6 years, maybe will then.
I have moved a lot in my lifetime. First because my dad getting transferred then alone because of my job. These look fun but it is time consuming too. But if the people in the particular place is not cooperating then it is hard. I loved the way you have explained your journey in here.
This is lots of fun and if I was young and single Could see myself wanting to do this. As a young kid I moved a lot because my dad was in the military and I loved moving to be honest…. making new friends was fun for sure but I do love that my husband has friends that he grew up with and they are still besties since they were 5 or 7 years old….
I have just had one big move from India to the UK . Moving is not for me. Once was enough. Moving brings too many uncertainties.
This is an interesting post with great tips for those planning to move. Personally, I hate moving, but did enjoy reading your post.
I’m happy where I am now but I did move around a lot when I was younger and I’m glad I did.
We are ok where we are situation right now, no plans on moving yet. It was a tiring move to here four years ago.
Amen to that. I know how wonderful was for us to move to Ireland. We have grown and learned so much from it.
It has been a long time since I have moved. However, the last time I did, it was a wonderful decision!! Sometimes, it is good to start over!!!
I’ve always loved the idea of moving and living in a different place or country. It will sure be fun and a little scary.
