Once upon a time, when I was a little girl, I had a dream. I knew that when I grew up, I would be a writer. When I was a child, being a writer was a glamorous thing. Typewriter keys clicked and snapped as the words flowed from your mind. But today, writing is not the same. Instead, we have blogging and it sucks.
It might seem like I’m jumping on the bandwagon with a few other bloggers, but hear me out. Blogging sucks. And that is something that you need to understand before you consider jumping on the bandwagon. I am forever getting asking weird questions about blogging.
Believe it or not, blogging is expensive. The actual running of the blog can be pretty pricey. Between web hosting, web design, paying for images….it all racks up. There are options to run your site for free but this brings a different set of problems. With a free site, you don’t get your own DA. And DA is important if you want to make money.
There is a mountain of different things that you need to learn if you want your blog to be profitable. That’s the dream, isn’t it? But what if it doesn’t work out that way? You will have spent hours learning, reading, building and pouring your soul into a blog that you might have to abandon. Running a blog is like running a little compact company, but you are every employee and do every task yourself. If you mess up, there is no-one to blame but yourself.
Facebook is the bane of the blogger. With a business page, you can promote your blog, which is great. Sad thing is that your hard work can be undone by a viral status from a one trick pony. Remember the woman who went viral after wearing a Chewbacca mask? She went on to earn thousands because of that. It was such a kick in the teeth to all the bloggers who put in 60+ hour weeks.
Does anyone even use Twitter? All I see is people using it to stalk celebrities and attempt to be witty. I have been on Twitter for years and I can barely use it. I will admit it, I’m not witty enough to use such a small space. Seriously, that’s why I blog! And even then I’m lucky if I get my point/humour across.
This….this is the one that really gets me. Instagram is one of the most shallow sites ever! I can post a picture and get 20 followers from it, but if I don’t follow back, they unfollow. You know what? F**k that noise! If you like a person’s Insta feed, follow them. If you are doing the follow/unfollow game, then don’t annoy me.
Believe it or not, I do make money from my site. “How much?!” I hear you all shout. None of your business is my answer. I know some people lie about making money on their site so that people will go there and pour over the details of their posts. They search and search, looking for answers. This is by far the most important piece of advice that I can give you, don’t go into blogging for the money.
