I'm doing better || My first ten experiments to become a better person

For the last while, I have been trying my hand at different experiments to try and be a better person. Let’s take a look back and see how far I have come with all of this work and review my first ten experiments.

I put my phone down

Experiment 1

I think we all know that we spend too much time on our phones. I’m terrible for getting caught up in Facebook drama and wasting my time fighting with people over non-issues. Seriously, how often have you found yourself caught up in some fight that has nothing to do with you? Or you have gone looking for something, like a hairstyle or the name of a TV show, and then, bang! Three hours have gone by and you have found yourself on the wrong side of the internet laughing at cat videos and memes? Too many times. It’s ok, you can admit that here, this is a safe space.

How has it been?

Since I put my phone down, I noticed that I’m not as distracted. But it is still hard to put my phone down, it is very addictive. And on more than one occasion I have caught myself on because I’ve got sucked into the dark void of memes. Recently, my phone updated and now it gives me a report of how much screen time I average every week.

I stopped watching TV

Experiment 2

I was really excited by this one because I know that I watch too much TV, or I did back then. My problem was recording shows (too many shows) and needing to watch them because the Tivo box was getting filled up too quickly. Nobody needs to watch that much TV. Even if I had upgraded the storage, I still would have been at my wit’s end with it. I had nearly 15 series of NCIS recorded, and as much as I love Gibbs, there was no mission of me watching all of them.

How has it been?

I haven’t missed TV at all. I do still watch TV, not gonna lie. But now I watch only an hour or two a week. There is very little that I watch now, I have been enjoying some Netflix with The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell. But that has been it. I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time to sit a watch anything else.

I tried to do the ironing

Experiment 3

Ironing clothes is one of those things that I love doing. I love crisp shirts and fabrics that have been pressed and folded. As much as I would love to be able to lift stuff from the dryer and fold it up, I can’t. My OCD won’t let me. But, I don’t get time to iron, or my back gives out. But it is mainly the time thing. So, after ditching the TV at night, there should be no reason why I can’t stand and iron, right?

How has it been?

This one has been a massive failure with me. I might get the ironing board out once a week (if I’m lucky) but most of the time, I have a pile of clothes that is taller than me that need to be ironed. I’m good at washing it all and getting it dried, but as soon as it comes to the ironing, I fall flat on my face. I was hoping that after ditching the TV I would be able to free up some time to stand and iron. Yeah, it didn’t happen, I always found something else to do.

I walked 5k steps a day

Experiment 4

I have been a bit lazy since the marathon and turned into a lazy bum. So I needed to get moving again. I know that the general rule is aiming for around 10k steps a day and/or 30 minutes of exercise, but I’m pregnant and have a dodgy back so I have to scale it down. I decided to hit 5k steps a day, it seemed like a reasonable target to hit.

How has it been?

This has been fun keeping an eye on my steps. Some days have been easy, then there are others when I wonder if I am about to go to seed. I tend to hit my target most days and try to be as active as possible. Sometimes, I really smash it and hit 10k steps (or more) but it does depend on the day of the week. Fridays and Mondays are my big days because I have stuff outside of the house that I do.

Experiment 5

When you start blogging, you think it will be easy. Blogging is one of the most difficult industries to try and make money, it is hyper-competitive, and most people start blogging for the wrong reasons. So why would anyone in their right mind want to start blogging if I am so negative about it? I don’t know why everyone goes into blogging, but for me, I just wanted to write. I’ve always wanted to be a hard-ass reporter like Lois Lane from Superman or April from Ninja Turtles.

How has it been?

When it comes to blogging, it will take more than a month to get it turned around, especially if you are trying to get in Googles good books. I did notice a bit of an upswing when after a few weeks, and the trend has continued into the following month. I still have so much to learn and I’m reading as much as I can to help me boost everything up. Maybe one day soon I’ll have it mastered so I can share the secrets of success with you too.

I tried out a daily to-do list

Experiment 6

In a bid to become more organised, I tried out a daily to-do list. I worked out what I needed to do and what I wanted to do, wrote out a list and done it. As simple as that sounds, it was a lot harder than you would think. There were 12 tasks that needed to be done but each task could be potentially time-consuming. Some of the things on the list were challenges from previous weeks so (in theory) it wouldn’t be too painful.

How did it go?

This was one of my more successful experiments because it helped me to make a real dent in a lot of things, just not the ironing. The house was a lot cleaner, everyone was calmer because I was more organised. This is one I have tried to stick at, no matter how bad of a day I’m having, because it has such a great knock-on effect on other areas of my life.

I tried out a beauty routine

Experiment 7

I decided to up my game and try to get ready before everyone else was out of bed. What mum doesn’t love a shower in peace? And getting to wear makeup and painted nails? Take me now! I love looking good, and I know some people find it liberating to ditch the makeup when they do the school run. Not me, I feel wrong, I like wearing my war paint but that is just me.

I tried an experiment with a beauty routine

How has it been?

I still struggle to get out of bed early enough to get ready before everyone else but I do try. I do complete the routine every day, I just don’t always get up early enough to do it before the school run. What I have noticed is that I have upped my makeup game and have started wearing lipstick most days, but that might have something to do with a random fact I heard. Apparently, the British Government once tried to ban lipstick because they considered a form of witchcraft. Is it true? I have no idea but has made me up my lipstick game.

I stopped swearing

Experiment 8

At the time, this experiment was a complete disaster because I didn’t stop swearing. In fact, I got worse! Swearing is one of those things that I do and I don’t realise that I’m doing it. It’s kinda sad really. I’m one of those people that can swear up a storm without a second thought for the small children and little bunnies that might be within earshot.

How has it been?

Since the experiment, I have been swearing a lot less. I still drop the odd F-bomb but as a general rule, it has dropped a good bit. I have no idea why the experiment went so badly, maybe it was playing on my mind that I wasn’t supposed to swear. Maybe I’m hardwired to swear. I have no idea but I know I won’t try to stop again, it just made things worse.

I lived like a 1950’s housewife for a week

Experiment 9

This was definitely an interesting one because everything (or most of the things) I had been doing up until this point made this one a lot easier. If I had just jumped into this one as the first experiment, I would have failed completely because it was tough being a housewife then. As tempting as it was, I managed to keep all of my labour saving devices, it didn’t fancy giving up my Dyson for a week.

How has it been?

Doing this experiment has definitely made me think more about injecting a bit more glam into my life. I have no intention of using all of the ideas from the 1950’s (smoking when pregnant and beating some discipline into your kids? No thanks) but there was plenty to learn. Housewives back then done everything with a bit of glamour. What’s not to love about that?

I watched my blood sugars for a week

Experiment 10

My health has been the at the forefront of my mind recently with being pregnant and after my run-ins with the clinics, I was determined to make my point. I spend the week tracking my food, my water, and my blood sugars. I’m not an unhealthy person and I have been really insulted by some of the staff at these clinics who think that I am stuffing my face with sugar and neglecting my health. Bitch, I run marathons when I’m not making babies, I know how my body works and filling it with sugar doesn’t do me any favours.

How has it been?

This was an awful experiment to do. I tend to graze at fruit and veg during the day so I found it hard not grabbing some carrot sticks when I got a dose of the nibbles because I had to leave some time between blood tests. I did realise that I could do with upping my water intake a bit more, but apart from that, there was nothing strange about my results. I am looking forward to throwing it in the doctors face the next time I see her, but I’m a petty bitch like that.

Overall thoughts on the experiments

When I started these, I didn’t think about how they would affect my everyday life. It has been really surprising how things have changed in the last few months. I will admit, this started as a way to create a bit of content for the site and try something new. I’ve a whole year of experiments planned out so it will be interesting to see how things play out after 12 months of trying to improve myself. Will I finally be a millionaire? Or will I just get rid of the ironing pile? Nobody knows, but time will tell.
